Greg Dulli is hardly the first person in the world to play the lothario. What sets him apart is just how fully rounded a character he presents. It's easy to write songs about using women for sex, but millions forget that womanizers are people too, with hearts and souls all their own. Gentlemen is Dulli's masterpiece for that very reason - it explores the emotional turmoil of a man who just can't help himself. Nothing is masked, and nothing is compromised - this is as much a record about laying a bleeding heart bare as Blood On The Tracks, except here, Dulli pulls off the masterful trick of inviting the listener to hate the protaganist while still feeling for him. It's packed with muscular tearjerkers, but Marcy Mays just about steals the show with "My Curse". Touching, provocative, haunting, sexy, and it still rocks - what's not to love about this maddeningly perfect record?

Great music overall, no songs that really strike me as bad or anything. It just isn't really that exciting.

The Afghan Whigs? Gentlemen certainly isn?t going to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. An album all about the downfalls of relationships isn?t one that most would find intriguing, given that it?s an idea that has been done to death since forever, but two things: 1. it?s far more thought-provoking and personal than you?d imagine, and 2. It doesn?t really matter anyways, because musically, this record excels in all aspects. Alt. Rock is something that can be (and was, at this time) very watered down and inexcusably generic, but whatever was running through frontman Greg Dulli?s mind going into this record made this an amazing beast. Undoubtedly, his love for funk and R&B music helped (listen to ?Debonair?, the band?s only minor hit), not to mention the incorporation of strings and piano, but also that he and the band were always very determined, which is a shame considering they fell under the radar. ?My Curse?, sung phenomenally by Marcy Mays of Scrawl, is the album?s emotional peak, but it?s another emotive track ?When We Two Parted? that is this album?s highlight, a delicate, poignant epic that makes this record one of the most underappreciated and unique records of all time.

Perhaps not the greatest grunge album but certainly a very strong contender. It manages to take the better parts of their previous two albums, the soulful lyrical & improved production quality, and cranked them up to either 8 or 9. In short, for any grunge enthusiast this is a record worth owning!

Great musicianship and compositions overall, with solid riffs and melodies. The same record with a more skilled singer would have been a superb album, however it's definitly a consistant effort, worth of interest.
