Like so many thrash bands at this time, Testament fall victim to softing up their sound, and like the rest, sithout too much success. Similarly to Metallica?s Black Album or even more to Megadeth?s Countdown, Testament slow doen their sound, but opposed to Metallica don?t soften it up too much. Just add more melody (including melodic singing). Some songs turn out good, and some worse, but overall one gets a more trad-metally Testament with a slightly bloated album.

I don't give a flying fuck if a band changes their sound, as long as it sounds good; and this record right here fucking rules. The Ritual doesn't sound like a thrash band softening their sound, it sounds like a band playing the music they were always meant to.

Had this album been released before they made their attempt to sell-out, it would have been received differently, which proves that sometimes timing is more important that the quality of your music when it comes to fan appreciation. It is quite clear that the core fanbase of this band were ready to slam them for their 2 previously crap albums. It is ashame though that this album got the bashing and not the previous two. This is still soft-thrash or thrash-lite, pretty much trending at the time, but it is far better executed and contains better songwriting. In a way, Testament pulled a Megadeth here, as Megadeth released their first thrash-lite album, Countdown to Extinction. Plenty of highlights on this album, some being terrific such as Electric Crown, As the Seasons Grey or Agony. The Sermon and Let Go Of My World are good too and The Ritual and So Many Lies are solid. Track 10 is the crappiest, the rest is filler. Pick this one up instead of PWYP and SoB.

Somehow underrated this is probably their last classic record (also with the original line-up).The Ritual has really good moments like Electric Crown, As the Seasons Grey, Agony and Return to Serenity.

As the closest Testament have come to releasing a more casual metal album (which it really isn't much of in the long run) means it obviously has the problem of not quite satisfying certain fans. Fortunately, The Ritual turns out to still be a good, if not borderline great album. There's seldom a truly amazing moment but conversely, nothing in particular drags it down.
