4.5 superb | Jared Floryan | November 13th 17 | Maybe I've said this somewhere before in my great big sound-off sea, though the universe is inhabited by a titanic pool of folks. They come in all different shapes, sizes, and carry distinctive personalities with interesting point of views, for lack of better phrasing. There is one person who I find intriguing and the same can apply to a record he put out in 1980: English singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel, best known as the original lead frontman for Genesis (and later on his own solo career.) On his third full-length album, Peter Gabriel 3: Melt, he's assembled 10 tracks - many of which neither skimp out on innovation nor are they lacking in thematic significance or instrumental depth. Although it's pop music that refuses to adhere to a buncha rules, that descriptor also doesn't really do the material on Melt justice; I say this because the LP can be hard to categorize at points. Peter will flirt with styles such as prog, hard rock, worldbeat, new wave, and even jazz over the span of this release's 45-minute length. For what it's worth, the man clearly knows what he's trying to pull off here, and rarely does the album ever become bad (let alone boring.) Okay, "And Through the Wire" with "Lead a Normal Life" in tow ain't quite as memorable as other tunes, yet they don't necessarily sour my enjoyment of the affair. Melt's a wonderful album that not only proves to be varied in sound, it's coherent too. Strong 4.5. Angel recommends: "Intruder," "Family Snapshot," "Games Without Frontiers," "Not One of Us," and "Biko."

4.5 superb | iSkane | April 11th 11 | I grew up on Peter Gabriel. The one CD that was always playing in my parents' car was Peter Gabriel's 'Shaking the Tree: Greatest Hits'. I loved this album, and once I grew up to realize that there are actually songs outside of greatest hits albums, I picked this up. There isn't anything Peter Gabriel can't do. He was fantastic in Genesis, and he's still going strong solo (except for the 'Scratch My Back' exception). Overall an amazing album, I also happen to have found it on vinyl for $3, how fucking great is that?

5.0 classic | StrizzMatik | June 29th 10 | I heart this album so much dear God. PG's indisputable masterpiece, dark, twisted and warped but so compelling and forward-thinking for its time. Phil Collins plays like a beast on this record, fusing tribal African rhythms (no cymbals of any kind were used on this album) with jazz, world music and Gabriel's dark, brooding prog-pop. The uniform bleakness and production on this record was truly groundbreaking for its time, heralding the creation of the boomy 80's "gated reverb" drum sound that dominated pop and rock music for a decade as well as being one of the first bands to combine harsh electronic sounds with progressive world/pop music, almost like a more linear Kid A. It even had political significance, helping to turn Western attention onto the plight of South Africa's apartheid laws with single "Biko", written about the slain civil rights leader. The album melts genres together into a tapestry of dark weird electronic Afro-funk pop songs that defy genre or label. More importantly, it has a cohesive sound that makes it a record to listen to front to back to really get the full experience. This is the album that finally and rightfully cemented Peter Gabriel as a viable, powerful solo artist and also proves in and of itself why this album is still vital 30 years later.

5.0 classic | Spamue1G | November 15th 08 | Possibly the best album ever. It surpasses everything Genesis ever did in emotion, though not complexity. The blending of so many styles pretty much created a new genre of music. World, Jazz, Experimental, Rock and even Pop are all to be found taking leading roles at one point or another in the album, but make no mistake, this is no awful, cheesy 80's pop album. This is what pure gold might sound like if it's worth and beauty was somehow transformed into music. Get this now.
Best Tracks: I Don't Remember, Family Snapshot (must buy), Games Without Frontiers (must buy), Lead A Normal Life, Biko (must buy).
