This isn't the maddening genre blend that the band perfected on The Shape Of Punk To Come, but you can tell they're getting there, because they're already blending metal and punk in a way that sounds little like either grunge or metalcore. The first three tracks are all outstanding blasts of frenzy, with unforgettable punk soundbites throughout ('Swallow the poison/Swallow every word!', 'I'd rather be dead than alive by your tradition!', and so on) - any of these songs could have made it onto Shape, and that's very high praise coming from me. "Return To The Closet" is a step down in tempo, but not necessarily in quality, and "Life Support Addiction" is as frenetic as the band ever got. Really, I could go on. This is just a classic punk album in every sense - it's a short, sharp, intelligent, furious jolt to the system every time. I rank this right up there amongst the best rock albums of all time, I really do - the lyrics, the drumming (check "The Slayer"!), the riffs, the song structures, everything about it just clicks time and time again, the way it only does for the best of bands.

Refused shows serious potential on Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent. The band's style is hardcore mixed with some metal influence, particularly on the riffs. The band has great energy, and some surprising technical chops. I love the way the album is produced, as it sound great in the car, with some really heavy kick drums, and some pretty damn good bass playing. The vocalist is talented as well, as has some well-placed screams on here. The album tends to get tedious towards the end, with the last 3 songs being pretty forgettable. While there are some great moments on StFtFoD, most of the tracks don't have much staying power. The short length of some songs actually hurt the band. This is still well worth at least a listen, and serves as a great precursor to their classic follow up. Best songs are Rather Be Dead, Hook Line & Sinker, Return to the Closet, Crusader of Hopelessness and the amazing It's Not Ok.

Infuriation is key to throwing a rock in the machine, as we call out to the power-hungry fools who stole our airwaves. While Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent is nowhere near as memorable, charismatic, or imperfectly immaculate as the record's successor, Swedish punk outfit Refused still proved via this release that angry, calculated progression was a beautiful thing. Dennis Lyxzen shouts and screams with burning tenacity, while the guitar riffs throughout compliment the smart ruthlessness these guys would go on to transform into an omnivorous tower. The songwriting barely grows stale as well, yet as everybody and their brainwashed grandma keeps saying, the overall structure would pale in comparison to The Shape of Punk to Come.
