At the risk of sounding like a cliche, this album was so unexpected to me, as an UnexpecT
fan. As soon as the first track started playing I knew this would be a new, different
creative trip. With more emphasis on violin and Leilindel's vocals, this turns up the artsy
side of unexpect quite a notch. Amazing, amazing album.

Every awful thing people acuse Between The Buried and Me of being guilty of is true of this album. Truly a noodling, spastic, though admittedtly an occasionally thrilling, block of "avant garde metal." No thank you. I'll stick with Colors.

In A Flesh Aquarium was the soundtrack to the itchiest asshole you've ever had. Fables of
the Sleepless Empire is the finger that scratches it away. ChaotH reigns.

No direction, no substance, horrible clean female vocals, a display of technique without ability to find strong riffs or spots, in fact they are changing spots every 10seconds. I can be a fan of this kind of music, but clearly not of this band with this album.

I don't see this being better than In a Flesh Aquarium or We, Invaders by any metric. There are great ideas, but the structures are a bit meandering, whereas on previous releases, the spastic quality was never out of place or unfocused, and every song had previously stuck out *almost* too much, but it landed because they were going full avant-garde. What they put more emphasis on with this release is enjoyable - more symphonic - but it also wears itself out before the end. One example is that the violinist on this release sounds fantastic, with some of the best parts of the album, but a lot of their parts also fulfill the same function in different compositions (drawn out melodic passages, regardless of other instrumentation - adds an interesting element harmonically, but the expectable nature of it counters their avant-garde strength). Overall, these bands members have already proven to be powerhouses, and while that isn't lacking on this release, I just don't feel that the tracks are distinguished from each other well enough. I can see why they'd feel dissuaded from touring with straight death metal groups, as they fit a specific in-between for spastic experimental prog metal. Here, they drop the spastic feel but keep the composition moving and it feels like something is missing. Still a great album, I just wish it didn't feel like the swansong of the discography.

I mean its prolly not a 5 but.....it's my favorite of the year and the musicianship/technique really slays. I also just love their style, sometimes they sound retarded (in a good way) and it makes me smile, or sometimes they unleash a frenzy of arpeggios stacked up against eachother and it makes my jaw drop. This band isnt for everyone, but if youre into anything over the top and ridiculous give it a spin its fucking sweetttt.

I was worried theyd come back after so long and this be like a "chinese democracy" but they stepped up past Flesh and pulled things together tighter while sticking to chaotic roots. Everything is killer and i love the blend of clean and growling vocals

Yet another collection of very strange music from Unexpect. Equally eclectic as In a Flesh
Aquarium, but it seems more smoothed around the edges, blending their musical ideas more
seamlessly. And ChaotH's bass is fucking ridiculous as always.
