This album has more going on than most discogs. Just an absolute song-writing masterpiece. Cohesive, thrilling, butt-kicking, genre-surpassing, best album of the first half of 2011.

A hardcore punk concept album with indie rock linings? That's what they want you to believe. The truth is, only the vocalist' singing style can transform this into a hardcore punk record. At its core, it's an epic and energetic rock album with maybe a punk riff from time to time. This is not to be taken as a criticism but rather as a note that this album only got its "hardcore punk" label because of the vocal style. Just consider it as a gnarly rock album with a shouting dude. And it's a damn fine album, in the same vein as Titus Andronicus's The Monitor: cool, full of bangers, epic both in concept and scope, but ultimately too overblown, overstuffed, and not diversified enough.

I want to love this thing so much, but it's just so goddamn long and not even remotely diverse. It's over an hour of astounding lovemaking guitar war, without a single misstep, but the fact that it all sort of blurs together and ultimately ends up being just "loud" in this format completely kills my desire to call this thing perfect. It does have some incredible tracks regardless, though. "The Other Shoe" is one of my favorites of 2011, easily.

On paper Fucked Up are my kind of band; boisterous, abrasive and a badass girl is playing bass. Ultimately Fucked Up allow their songs to go on for minutes after they ceased to entertain. Each song on this LP is fully twice as long as I would prefer considering the amount of ideas per song (Fucked Up are no Propagandhi). In execution, Fucked Up fail to impress with repetitive song structures, solid vocals and drums, lack-luster guitar work and barely-there bass. Queen of Hearts, A Little Death and perhaps another 12 minutes off the 77 minute total runtime merit a 4.5 but this album is SUBMERGED IN FLUFF.
