Wild Beasts' sleeping behemoth. It was only a matter of time before these lads nailed it. They've been teasing a classic since their debut. A consistent, constantly improving band.

I wish I could better explain my dislike for Smother, but I'll just say Hayden Thorpe and Tom Fleming are the worst vocal duo ever. There's this incessant talk of the real shit being hidden in there with repeated listens and what not. But I ain't hearing nothing but garbage, murk, and a whole lot that terrible singing from both of those dudes over and over again - be it with one listen to Smother or twenty. I haven't checked out the rest of Wild Beasts' output, and although people say it's all different from the rest, with singers like this I can't imagine it being any better at all, really. Smother sucks, and those afraid to rate this badly because of a fear of not being hip and cool can come out now: you're not alone.

This album is incredible, I can't get my head around it. During the first piano notes of Lion's Share, I knew this album was going to beat Two Dancers in my "list of favorites". And I loved Two Dancers. The haunting voice of Thorpe, the cynical but intimate lyrics and the soothing melodies made Smother the only album I could listen to for two weeks in a row. One could say I was addicted. As time passed and new music was discovered, I managed to finally detach myself from the album. Now that I've survived the intense introduction to the album, I give the album a few listens a week, enjoying its beauty. Sporadically, one of the songs haunts my head on the most random moments and I can't help but sing along.

Smother is the third full length album released by Wild Beasts, a band which can best be described by the title of their very first single, “Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants”. Though Wild Beasts are often defined as an “Indie Rock” band, they can hardly be placed in any specific genre. They are simply themselves. Smother opens with “Lion’s Share”, a powerful song with the incomparable vocals of Hayden Thorpe, projected with ease. “Albatross”, the first single released off of Smother, is eerie and thought provoking, creating a picture that most will subconsciously relate to. The album then concludes with “End Comes Too Soon”, an incredibly epic and bizarre song that leaves the listener curious as to what it all means. Overall, Smother follows queue with their first two albums and is an extraordinarily beautiful work of art.

I didn't know if Wild Beasts would pull through after their masterpiece Two Dancers. They really did. This album is one of my favourites of 2011 so far and I think it will stay up there until the end of this year.
