| 3.5 great | Bedex | November 21st 21 | Written far too long in retrospect This very much feels like an erratic, chaotic, sometimes cool sometimes annoying compilations of songs that have little to do with each other. Given a lot of these are covers it kinda makes sense. 1 is awkward, 2 has more of a riff but unfolds badly, 3's main interest probably lives in its lyrics though from the midtrack on the guitar playing gets quite cool, 4 is an okay song with a harder and cooler last quarter, 5 is a kinda cool but basic song, 6 is quite annoying because the vox does not fit the vibe at all, 7 is fun, gets a bit much but with a cool conclusion portion. 8's cool spoken word, 9's wankery af, 10 is almost a folk song and is alright, 11 is the first jam on this and is super fun, but 12 is unbearable, unnecessary and so short as well why oh why. 13 is nice with its groovier and lazier vibe, 14 is dissonant in a way I quite like then turns into a regular cadillac track for like 20s, 15 is mostly chill guitar, and 16 is a cool recorded piece sung over the phone. I quite like it as a conclusion although it obv cant be a jam with that prod. Not really the LP I wanted their discog to end on, but it's alright. 3.4

| 2.9 good | Erwann S. EMERITUS | May 7th 20 | This one's weird. Boon wanted to emulate the 70s rock slack approach, to Watt's discontent. It's thus a lot mellower than previous outputs, and at times it doesn't even really sound like Minutemen - eg five songs out of sixteen are covers! They didn't have the time to properly write and prepare the new material, and it also was underrehearsed. Still, it's more eclectic than usual, although underdeveloped: since the direction taken for this record wasn't encouraged by the whole band, it's kinda underdeveloped. The Creedence cover is cool tho. So, yeah, it's their worst record. Fucking shame it was their last one too.

| 0.0 | BMDrummer | August 16th 14 | The final album from The Minutemen is a strange one. At points it didn't even feel like I was listening to The Minutemen since it included tons of elements of classic 70s rock we all should love. They still jam econo, but the direction hinted at on Project Mersh is coming out even more; but they aren't selling out or anything like that. Of course this record must've pissed off some closed-minded old school punkers, but The Minutemen have always been ahead of their peers in terms of what both punk and jamming could achieve. Their final album sure enough will jump between simple jamming, some calls back to their heroes in the 70s, acoustic songs, surf music, flamenco, studio fuckery, and sometimes all of the above in one song. It's interesting to think of what the next Minutemen album would've been like, and this one will always leave me curious.
