The fact of the matter is, is you can only compare Rush to Rush, and in that, they have better albums than this. Its good, quite good indeed. But there are better albums.

Apparently this is the first album I?ve ever heard, fresh out of the hospital when I was born. Honestly not a bad one either. One of their lesser-appreciated gems. Even at their worst, Rush is a class act and one of the greatest bands ever

I don't know why this LP consistently gets low ratings in the Rush catalog. Maybe it's release coincided with a time in my life I really identified with it. The song writing, mix of instruments, and Geddy's vocals are all excellent. Favorite tracks are Time and Motion (one of my top Rush tracks), Driven (the bass is ridiculous) and the instrumental track Limbo is gorgeous. Give it a listen.

This album, not the sterile, overproduced Counterparts, seems to herald Rush's return to their rock roots. The whole band is playing with balls again, particularly Alex Lifeson. Test For Echo seems colored by the alternative rock/grunge sound that was popular at the time. Understandably, it's a polarizing album due to its more straightforward nature.

There are some really great songs here (Test For Echo, Virtuality, Resist), but there are also some very weak songs (Dog Years, Time And Motion, Half The World). Worthwhile but not vital.

As the primary review for this album states, on Test for Echo Rush seems to find themselves without a true sense of direction. One can forgive the album's slightly off-putting feel and atmosphere due to the transition still in place from 80's to 90's era Rush. This isn't too say this is an awful recording, since most of what Rush does still sounds better then the vast majority of their modern peers. Still, it is a bit disppointing for a release from a trio with such high calibre. Thoughout the album's meandering path there are a few gems though, namely the title-track, Driven, and Resist - perhaps Totem out of genorousity. Aside from this tracks, however, there just isn't anything strong enough to drive the songs all the way home (at least with this listener). Sad to say this is probably in my 5 least favourite Rush discs, though it's still a decent record nonetheless.

good stuff! no, great stuff! this is a very tight record... there's some hits and misses on here, but I still think it's amazing to see these guys continue to be one of the only bands to last this long with the same 3 guys over 30 some years.
