When it comes to highly polished pop punk anthems no one is currently doing it better than The Wonder Years.

I listen to The Wonder Years - any of their albums, really - and I get that same feeling of bitterness and resentment that I imagine fans of bands like The Gaslight Anthem, The Menzingers, and, hell, even New Found Glory must get while listening to them, or any pick-and-choose modern "pop-punk" band: oh hey - this is, what do you know, more pseudo-sunny bull shit for the kiddies. If you like this, fine. But for the life of me, I don't hear anything here that stands out or makes The Wonder Years the Second Coming of Jesus Christ for pop-punk that sites like AbsolutePunk and, oh fucking God, sputnikmusic make them out to be. I was unimpressed with The Upsides and found Suburbia - [and insert random shit] even more infuriating: Grade-A Meh.

Unless it's about a girl, you usually don't get this brutally honest with pop punk. Suburbia sets The Wonder Years apart from their compatriots with lyrics that hit like a train and music to match.

Suburbia really sneaked up on me. A beyond solid, catchy, expansive pop-punk release in a year destined to
go down as the best year for pop-punk possibly ever. That was my first impression. But upon delving
deeper into the lyrics, Dan "Soupy" Campbell's genius storytelling becomes evident through the allusions,
motifs, and indelible one-liners found throughout every song. Even more astounding is the fact that his
lyrics are frighteningly personal, and yet every listener will be able to relate to and empathize with the
experiences described in Suburbia. On a final and maybe most important level, as one reviewer put it: I can't
help but think that this is the kind of music I would make if I made music. It's just so darn fun.

Suburbia... is the 1st pop punk record in a long time that sparked my interest. Soupy Campbell and the Wonder Years don't exactly break new ground in the genre, I find their music to be more thoughtful than whiny. The music is therapy for Campbell, and it helps to provide the album with an inspired, cohesive feeling. He is able to write deeply personal and specific lyrics while still making them relateable to the listener. Aside from that, the vocals are solid, most of the hooks are epic, and the instruments are pretty damn fun and even technical in a lot of parts. There are some really memorable guitar and drum performances, particularly on Local Man Ruins Everything. The album is a bit front loaded, but the weaker parts don't last long, and it's a rare pop punk record that reveals more of itself upon repeated listens. Other stand outs are Came out Swinging, Woke up Older, Life as a Pigeon, I Won't Say the Lord's Prayer and Hoodie Weather.

This was the album that first put The Wonder Years on the map for me. With Suburbia they took what made The Upsides a good album and improved upon it. Suburbia has a sense of maturity for The Wonder Years, and put them on the map as a leading force in the modern pop punk resurgence.

Although I can't say I love it as much as other people claim to, this album is still quite good. There are a bunch of good songs, and there are also songs that flunk. There is something about the band; an overwhelming sense of sincerity to their music that makes it hard to not like. I will definitely check out their next release.

'Suburbia' was one of the most looked forward to pop-punk albums of the year, and it doesn't let you down. It's filled with life like lyricism, catchy hooks and tons of fun along the way. Personally, the only problem here is the lack of plays it's received. Only 3 full plays and I'm already a little meh of it, just in my opinion. Overall though a worthy follow up to 'The Upsides' without pushing themselves over the edge.

Awesome album! Lyrics are so good. Love how they keep true pop-punk alive. The Upsides had more of a better musical and melodic sound then Suburbia. Suburbia has better lyrical content then the Upsides, but only by a little. Upsides in my opinion was just a better all around album then Suburbia, but only by a little.
