Bit of an underrated debut. Does it live up to the rest of their catalogue? Not wntirely mostly due to inconsistencies. It is however by no means any bad. It seems like Nevermore focus less on just being heavy, and more on more complex riffing and variation, which is highly appreciated. As meantioned earlier, it does result in some incosistency, and the vocals are not too good, but other than that it is not by any means worse than their other stuff.

Enjoyable debut. The best songs here are "What Tomorrow Knows", "The Sanity Assassin", "The Hurting Words" and "Timothy Leary".

Nevermore is a pretty impressive debut, and showcases the material and sound that the band would come to build on. The vocals are a little raw at times, but Dane's brilliance is still there, and at points it's hard to believe this is Jeff Loomis' first album with some of the intense solo/shredding he's able to pull off. All around this stacks up pretty closely to other Nevermore albums, although perhaps not quite there with the classics. Nonetheless, the album is intense and shouldn't be ignored by any fan of the band.

Nevermores debut Album is a pretty good one. The style on this one is not as developed as on the later albums and you can still hear the shadows on "Sanctuary" in the music. Still, there's killer music to be found here. Standouts are the groovish but nevertheless catchy opener "What Tomorrow Knows", the somehow furios "Godmoney" and my personal highlight, the very technical "Gardens of Gray" that also features a few progressive influences.
But there are also some things here, that I actually don't like. You might notice, that Warrel Danes vocal style is still under development here. On songs like "What Tomorrow Know" or "The Hurting Words" he sounds nearly as intense as on future albums, but "The Sanity Assasin" feels a little bit cheesy to me.
This is proably the worst Nevermore Album but it also is solid and definitly worth listening. Eight tracks with one downer do still make a good album.

A great start for Nevermore. The playing isn't up to par with their current work, but musically they keep it together. The lyrics are a little iffy at times, especially during the laughable "Timothy Leary". Overall, an obviously unexperienced effort laced with questionable decisions. Definately a step in the right direction though.
