| 0.0 | bloc | March 24th 11 | Were you disappointed with Obscura's Omnivium? Is that modern tech death hole in your heart getting bigger and bigger? If so, Beyond Creation has written an album that is sure to fill up any and all voids. The Aura is a perfect example of modern death metal done right; from the vocals to the riffs to the guitar solos and even to the damn fretless bass solos. What really makes this work is the immaculate production. Not only can you hear the fretless bass whine in every song, but the levels are set in such a way so that you can simply hear everything very comfortably. And did I mention these guys are from Quebec? So yeah, it's possible that they know their shit when it comes to death metal...

| 3.0 good | Ulsufyring | May 29th 11 | ugh this. i mean, yeah, they are talented, and they aren't just run of the mill death metal going dwiddly woddly bwoodly woodly, but at the same time it's like most tech music in that it just shoves the technicality down your throat over and over, like a giant dick that you'd love to have taken out if you could say something.rthat aside, i definitely can't say it sucks. very solid songwriting is present. i just wish it wasn't so obnoxious

| 3.0 good | climactic | March 30th 14 | I used to be a massive death metal noob. When general consensus told me an album was good, I listened and agreed without really thinking for myself. I saw bands like Amon Amarth, Nile, Beyond Creation, Rings of Saturn, Revocation, etc. all being praised highly by everyone and I thought to myself, "Man, they must be good because everyone loves them", and I pretended to like them too, even when I had issues with the music, I tried to ignore it and think, "no, it's objectively good". But then one day I stopped trying to do that, and I started thinking for myself. Now when I make criticisms of bands like these, I'm dubbed an elitist, or a try hard, or edgy, or a guy just trying to get approval from other elitists: no. No, BEFORE I started criticising these bands, that's when I was being a try-hard, trying to win the approval of others by saying, "Hey, I like these bands too!", but when I suddenly grow into my own tastes and discover my own opinions, that's when I'm the fake, posing elitist? rNo, go fuck yourself.

| 4.0 excellent | XfingTheSullen | November 6th 11 | Omg, it's probably the best tech death album in quite a long while to be honest. A bit one-dimensional and not very futuristic feeling (has more of a classical feel actually), but dammit it's a good album! Freaking awesome.

| 5.0 classic | psyroptus | April 16th 11 | This album is clearly the best one to have come out this year up to now. I'm pretty sure it will stay my top one for the year.rI personnaly know the guys and there is a lot of work behind this album! rEverything you need is there. Brutality, progression, groove, technicality, feel. The songs just get into your head and heart.rThe album is great from the start to the end; and when it finished you press play again !rPlus they are awesome live!rA must buy!

| 4.0 excellent | GamamJ | July 23rd 20 | Spectacular modern tech-death effort. Certainly one of tge best progressive death metal records of the decade, The Aura has everything from complex proggy chord-progressions and melody to wanky instrumentation and heavy riffs. The time signatures are surprisingly mostly 4/4, but pften sound odd due to syncopation. Great flow, but many of the traxks do not stand out on their own. The closer and second track are my clear gighlights.

| 2.0 poor | EasterInTheBatcave | May 10th 16 | Undoubtedly, many will propose that my criticisms against this record are criticisms of entrenched aspects of its genre and that, as such, my mentioning them as negative is unfair. However, I in turn propose that, if the qualities I bring up are of the album-- that is, regardless of whether or not they are typical of the genre-- then they, as this is a review of that album, should be addressed, in spite of any typicality. Now, with that said, The Aura is in someways an atypical technical death metal release; namely, its use of fretless bass, which is outstanding. There are also some very good clean moments that occasionally appear (a latter section of "Coexisted" and the short "Elevation Path"). However, the monotonous vocals (which are mixed quite high) and, indeed, the monotony of the nonstop technicality, render it an overall boring affair when heard in full. The production and performances (besides the vocals) are excellent, but ultimately The Aura is unsatisfying as a whole because it does not maintain my interest for its runtime. Some great tracks ("Omnipresent Perception") and the aforementioned good qualities, though, award it points.

| 3.0 good | branflakes911 | February 28th 14 | Run of the mill technicality and precision marred by uncompelling composition, boring riffs and pathetic break downs. Survives on the occasional high point and very nice bass work from Dominic Lapointe and little else.

| 0.0 | Seanny | December 3rd 11 | I find this to be very.. refreshing. I'm not a fan of tech death, either. I think Necrophagist is utterly boring, I
hate the stop-starty-clicky shit, and random bits of frantic guitar playing thrown in your face. This album is
very coherent and maintains a monumental sound, while being technically proficient and includs enough
progressive elements to keep it interesting. The production is clean enough that each instrument stands out,
without it sounding sterile. A very enjoyable listen. This is probably something I would use as an introduction
into the extreme metal sound for a metal virgin.
