this shit is completely ridiculous. on a sidenote, "Rest, You Are the Lightning" is a rerecorded version w/ vocals of the 1st Untitled track off of the Tour Rehearsal Demo

It has emotion, aggression, atmosphere... Basically everything that makes a black metal record good. Oh, and that production quality is awesome!

Cascadian black metal always got that special atmospheric knack to it, but Ash Borer wear it with a sense of nihilistic despair thanks to their doomy influences and br00tal moments, more reliant on suffocating instants than on eerie passages - even though some ambient, synth-led lull bring some salvation. They also know how to craft urgent melodies reminiscing of post-rock epics a la EITS. Another great Cascadian black metal release, who's surprised?

Very glad I checked it. It's far from perfect, and there are some losses of focus and rhythm in at least 2/3 tracks, but man when they explode these guys really can throw some raw and aggressive bm wall at you. This is particularly visible in 1 and 3 where the explosions are sudden (but good) after nice melodic or calmer passages. 3 has some of hte best bits here - that intro explosion, the melodic interludey bit around min 6, some other riffage later on, but also the worst with an album conclusion that gets frankly annoying and takes this down a point. 2 is quite epic like 1 but both have slightly awkwards bits, and 2 perhaps more so. All in all an excellent album that I'd recomment but with flaws that keep it to strict 4.0 range. At this point in their career AB feel like a band taht has a 5.0 in them potentially should they master album construction - but from the sput ratings it doesn't look like that magnum opus has come out yet. 4.05

This is good black metal album, yet it incorporates elements from other genres also, like post rock and some ambient. It is also pretty melodic in some parts. The only problem is that the screaming vocals seemed to be really faded out of the music; they are very light, that can be typical of black metal, but these vocals seemed to be harder to hear than usual, at least in some parts of the album. There are only three songs but the third song would be the best of the album, it is also the longest. The first two songs are good, but third is where the most variation is shown and is the best musically.
