Wow, this is so fucking good. The only album by these guys I had heard up to this point is "Talvyio", so I expected this to suck ass too. Thankfully, it doesn't, not even fuckin close.

Works well in laying the foundation for a more refined future; Ecliptica offers a bit of everything for the more casual metal listener who can look (or hear) past some production shortcomings.

Sonata Arctica create an album that I can't quite call bad but that I can't say much else about either. The songs are plagued by mostly generic structures with solos littered clumsily in each song (there are some okay synth solos every now and then to at least switch it up). Tony is a good vocalist, but the harmonic singing in almost every chorus is horribly cheesy. The guitar work is fairly technical. The drums don't stand out grandly. The lyrics talk about somewhat more than the average album of the genre, with a song about governmental control and another with a fictional character undergoing a modern circumstance (something you rarely see in this genre). Sonata Arctica give a passable debut that is somewhat fun to listen to, but that few will look back at with wonderfully fond memories.rEdit: also, what is up with the Christian song telling the listener they're going to hell? lmao.
