Gloriously fractured, the sound of a band dipping and diving without restraint. A complex and ambitious record tied together by a common thread of charm, Angles sees The Strokes grinning at you in the background every time they change tempo unexpectedly, showing off a different manifestation of the confidence that made Is This It? such a joy to listen to and flexing their muscles in a plethora of different ways at the same time.

This album is disappointed from both the point of view of a Strokes fan and a music lover. Many of the songs feel aimless and lackluster, and seem to be completely devoid anything I enjoyed about the band. Some songs have that slight reminder that this is indeed still the same band that released 'Is This It' and 'Room on Fire', but it really feels like Julians solo work has seeped into The Strokes and to no beneficial end.rOver all the album passes as decent, but is a bit of a disappointment.

So what we have here, in my opinion, is an album of filler tracks, none of which are bad, but few of which are outstanding. The album starts with its two strongest tracks, Machu Picchu and Under the Cover of Darkness, both of which are exciting to listen to and well produced. However, after these two admittedly great tracks, the album drops off and the rest of the songs are pretty forgettable, I found. Often I couldn't pick out any technical flaws but none of the songs really had me gripped or surprised. So, a solid effort with a great opening, but too cookie cutter in the middle.

It's tough to follow a great debut album. Few bands know this like the Strokes, who made not only a great debut album but a sparse debut album. Following it is tricky. 'Angles' has that flickering guitar-and-drums line up, it's just dressed up in a jigsaw of odd sounds: forays of varying quality into disco, electronica and pop. They'll probably never top 'Is This It?', and certainly don't with 'Angles.'

While this is not the big comeback fans were hoping for, make no mistake: there is growth here. For every conflicting mess like "Metabolism", there is a glimmer of hope like "Taken For A Fool". The Strokes may not be "back" yet, but nothing about "Angles" certifies that they aren't on their way.

While, "Angles" is not "Is This It" for the 2010s, the album is a good one from the band, getting back up from what "First Impressions of the Earth" was. Yet, to be honest, the only song I found perfect, not for its catchiness, but for its sound and because (well, yeah) it's fun and danceable is "Machu Picchu". I don't know if it's worth mentioning, but I loved the surreal lyrics and the andine-sounding music.

Just like every other album by The Strokes, Angles starts off well but then slowly begins to loose direction in the later tracks. This is not helped by the shiny production values, as it loses any of the garage rock charm it's predecessors had. So Is This It? Not really.

Puttin your patience to the test.... ya guys obviously. Machu Picchu is a hell of a song and Under the Cover of Darkness a good follow up, but things start to fall apart after those songs. Some songs are quite ok(Two Kinds of Happiness) but some are just atrocious(Youre so right, Metabolism) and many of the synthie-pop experiments just fail to impress(Games). Both Little Joy and Casblancas Solo did way better if you ask me. (Though Nickle Eye and Hammond Jr. were terrible)

Not a return to form, but an evolution in the band's sound. They can still be the full-of-piss and vinegar street punks with the bittersweet romantic side ("Under Cover of Darkness" is an immediate and uber-catchy Strokes single in every sense of the word) but they've decided to start experimenting a bit with their trademark sound and the results are both engaging and natural. New wave, reggae, dance-punk and other genres are flirted with and it never sounds forced or out of character. Whenever someone tries to tell me that rock and roll is dead, I simply put them in the direction of The Strokes, who continue to make familiar yet wholly unique music that manages to capture the sounds of hope, frustration, and yearning of this modern generation. It's low-key in comparison to previous albums, and certainly no "This is It", but it's still an excellent album that is rewarding upon multiple listens.

"The Strokes return to form!" "Back to the basics!" Hardly. After hearing the single, 'Under Cover of Darkness,' I was stoked (no pun intended) to hear this album. It contained all the jagged, angular (get it?) riffs that made "Is This It?" and "Room On Fire" such undisputable classics, as well as a superb vocal turn by Julian Casablancas. One can imagine my immediate dissapointment upon hearing the rest of the album. While I cannot say this record is bad, I can certainly not bring myself to say it is good. Hopefully the backlash will not deter The Strokes from making music, nor send them into relative obscurity for the next five years, but rather spur them on to return the reigns to Julian. Ahhh, fuck it. "I just can't think, cause I'm just way to tired. Is this it?"rAfter a few listens, this album is growing on me. There's more than meets the ear, but I stand by my intitial assessment; this is not The Strokes of old. This record, released 10 years after their debut, sounds very much like the progression of culture itself; from focused, if a bit fuzzy, to intensely distracted and disjointed. Great album, but not up to par with my expectations.

The Strokes show that they still have plenty to offer in 2011 with super-swag retro bounce and enough experimentation to keep things from getting stale. If the material found on Angles is any indication, the best of the Stokes may still lie in the future.

After it's had a few months to sit in I've decided that I couldn't be more satisfied with the Strokes comeback album. Tracks like Machu Picchu and Taken for A Fool rank right up there with some of the Strokes best songs and even duds like You're So Right and Metabolism don't throw the album of track.

On first listen: This is coming off as a throwback to 80's synths and treated drums. I am only half-way rthrough, but the raw "garage-rock" appeal that made Is This It and (to a lesser degree) Room on Fire so rendearing seems present solely in Under Cover of Darkness. The instrumentation is more complex, runnerving, and at times, bewildering. Track 5 is a strong point, but I'm preferring Phrazes for the Young to this right rnow.rEdit: I'm finished. I'm dissapointed. I'm a huge fan. Bottom Line? Room on Fire was fun. Is This It was light and rbouncy. First Impressions of Earth was darker, and Electricityscape and everything before it were progressive. The last rfew tracks were shit.rAngles is not a fun listen. It wears on my patience. It does not have the bounce hooks or memorable melodies. Hoping rit will grow. Someday...rEDIT: It's growing....
