5.0 classic | jacobdixon | June 27th 06 | here's the thing about anathallo....not only are they immensly talented, but they are not content with being defined by a specific genre...they are far reaching and their music is sweeping and moving and takes on a life of its own...but still beyond that, it's encouraging to see a band with such immense talent and drive to take the name of 'christian' to new heights...their music is thoughtful and genuine, and their attitudes are uplifting...previous to seeing them live, i had never seen a band stand and not only watch, but dance and sing along to 10 opening bands [when there was only supposed to be 4] and show support for kids who had been playing together for but a short time....they remember what it's like and they were there to encourage and lift up...this band is going places and for good reason

3.5 great | Iai EMERITUS | January 17th 07 | I really, really enjoyed this one. Anathallo's music places them firmly in the folk revival, somewhere between Stfu Stevens and Espers; it's ethereal, vaguely psychedelic, and certainly kalaidoscopic. The range of this band is startling, just as Sufjan is at his best. There's accordions, flutes, horns, all sorts all over this album. Yet, crucially, they've got solid songs. That's not just to say that they're good, but also that they're easy to grasp. As much as I love Espers, trying to get into them can sometimes be like trying to build a tower of water. Floating World succeeds because it's not as distant or twee as its contemporaries - it's a set of good, idiosyncractic pop songs, and it's all the better for it. The final 3 or 4 songs are the highlights.

2.5 average | mx STAFF | August 30th 06 | Anathallo can perhaps best be described as a bizarre mix of Dredg and Sufan Stevens, with the cohesion and songwriting talent of neither. Throwing a variety of musical styles into the pot in search of something that sticks, Anathallo seems to always be reaching for the perfect song, but always seems to fall short. The only remotely interesting tracks are the "Hanasakajiji" sequence, but even those lack enough to draw the listener back.
