ayeah post-jazz; using jazz instruments in a non-jazz way. Indeed, Stetson plays all kinds of wind instruments (many saxo types as well as French horn) on top of programmed electronics. Constantly dynamic, this live sesh is haunting, with Stetson making his sax sounds like it's fucking crying. Also, Ben Frost is the mixing engineer and Laurie Anderson makes several vocal apparitions. Swag, if a tad too, uh, not frightening enough, especially given the all-star cast?

Fiercely experimental and technically masterful, Colin Stetson's New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges is a masterpiece. The entire record was recorded live in single takes, with Stetson utilizing over twenty microphones-- placed in various positions in the studio-- to capture the numerous sounds emitted while playing his baritone sax. The precision and control displayed, and Stetson's utter mastery of circular breathing, is astounding. Laurie Anderson and Shara Worden appear on a few of the tracks here as well, and their contributions are fantastic. Gripping and atmospheric from beginning to end, New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges is one of the best records of the decade.

Amazing artist and album but on this record most of the songs sound too stale compared to what Stetson delivers live and when listening there is just something missing in the production to give true life to tracks like awake on a foreign shore (whereas live it almost shreds you in pieces), hopefully next album will have a more "alive" production. Even with that said it's impossible for me to give this anything less (and nothing more either) than a solid 4.
