2.5 average | Xenophanes EMERITUS | February 19th 11 | Oh baby I tried, hell, I even lied to myself by giving this a higher rating. Regardless, this is not the band I fell in love with on Kezia, nor is it the mature, refined group of young men I admired on Fortress. They stripped away everything that made them such an intelligent and fun band, and instead created a vapid, uninteresting album full of terrible, terrible lyrics, and copy/pasted pieces from their other works. Scurrilous is boring, poorly thought out, and carelessly written; the definition of a disappointment.

4.0 excellent | Matte | February 19th 11 | With their past albums, the "core" parts of Protest The Hero's sound were constantly criticized by their extremely vocal haters. Too much wankery. Not heavy enough. Horrible vocals. Well now we have Scurrilous, and it's pretty much the band saying "let's take everything people don't like about us, and do more of it." Being 10x more technical, 1/2 as heavy, and having 10000x more operatic vocals, Scurrilous amplifies everything that the haters hated, and as a result succeeds in being one of the most catchy, fun, complex, and outstanding albums that 2011 has offered so far.

4.5 superb | IRAI | February 19th 11 | If there are two things you know and love about PTH, it would be their awesome Shredding, and their cheesiness that they add into it all.
I would call Scurrilous, "Shredded Cheese".

0.0 | Deviant. STAFF | February 25th 11 | Band with obvious talents somehow misplace their eccentric absurdities and craft one hell of a dull album in the process. Sure, 'C'est La Vie' is a great tune, but it's all downhill from their as the rest of the album displays absolutely nothing unique about it. Quite possibly the biggest disappointment of the year so far; would've been better if they had just made the album a continuous mix and claimed that the album was one single track

3.0 good | AshleyRiot | March 9th 11 | An album rich in fleet fingered fretwork and leg cramping double bass barrages, but severely lacking in ractual songs. Protest the Hero had always teetered between the realms of indulgent guitar histrionics and rcontemporary prog-punk wonderment, but it seems somewhere along the line, the band's ambition had rmanaged to fully eclipse their musical sensibilities. Guys, we get it, you can play your instruments (very well rat that)! Just pull it back! We don't need wave after wave of sweeps and tapping passages to blemish what rwould have been a well crafted piece of prog-punk. Remember the keyboard solo from "Limb from Limb?" rImagine that in every song, but instead of said keyboard, it was a guitar. That essential surmises that rentirety of Scurrilous, musically at least. Now, couple that with the fact that Rody has stripped himself of his rgreatest strength (his ability the seamlessly incorporate a variety of different vocal tricks into his rperformance) and you've got a recipe for disaster. No screaming, no death growls, all singing. Take this as ryou will, but Rody's versatility as a singer was his undeniable niche. Yes, he's still a formidable vocalist, but rthe dude just sounds awkward when he sings passages which would be better suited for a rscream or growl. I wanted to love it but this is, by far, the greatest disappointment of the year.

0.0 | chris0987 | February 21st 11 | I listened to this album for what it is, I used to be a huge protest the hero fan. But now their songs have no flow anymore, it's mostly all wankery.. not much you can really enjoy, every song just sounds the same as the last, with the exception of the song tapestry. That song is fantastic, but the rest of the album i found painful to listen to. Just being honest, fanboys gonna hate on me

This was supposed the to be the album that in which Protest The Hero was supposed to jump the shark and land in the crowded waters of boring "shredded cheese" metalcore (if I may borrow a wonderful term from an older soundoff), but instead it's their most consistent, yet diverse release to date. And what's more, it sounds like nearly no other band in the scene today. I can't believe I'm about to say this, but....are Protest The Hero all of a sudden on the one of the elite bands in metal music?rI is confused."r-Don't be confused. 5.0 classic | Borrillz | February 26th 11 | This album really has a great flow and I love the melodic stuff these guys are starting to include. I'm glad they didn't make an over-technical jizzfest like I was expecting, a man can really groove to these songs. There are also some off the wall classical progressions that really add to the album. It's actually unreal that a group of 20-something Canadian potheads can make music like this.

4.0 excellent | Cryio | February 26th 11 | It's Protest the Hero guys. It's straight out, blow-your-freakin'-mind music. The lyrics are not the deepest you can find, but they work well. 3.0 good | XplaugeX | February 21st 11 | I hate it. It's technical, sure, they have skill, bla bla bla. You can only go apeshit on the guitar for so long before it becomes repetitive and dull. 2.1 poor | Erwann S. STAFF | October 20th 20 | I'm too old for that shit. Although I quite liked them when I was 17, I've grown off Protest the Hero. Not that they instantly became bad, but their aesthetic does not appeal to me anymore. The tech guitars are cool but tiring on the long run; the NWOBHM vocals do not match the resolutely modern sound; and the overall cheesiness seems even more cheesy to me than early Carly. There are some ok "epic" parts.

4.0 excellent | NewBallistics | February 23rd 16 | A refreshing and creative follow up to one of my defining classics, PTH takes a somewhat melodic turn with this album. 3.0 good | TRMshadow | November 15th 12 | Imagine for a moment a trip to the beach with your best bud. Things start out great, it's sunny with a couple nice sun-blocking clouds in the sky, not perfect but things look promising; so you start your walk. Sadly, before you have a chance to enjoy the day for what it is your buddy chimes in reminding you of how great a high-school trip with all your classmates. You start reminiscing about the magical day and realize how nothing could match the experience no matter how hard you try. That simile is this album in a nutshell; a great album in and of itself, but so reminiscent of the perfection you felt before that it drags the actual day down and makes it hard for you to enjoy it for what it is. 3.2/5

2.0 poor | harddrughartman | August 16th 12 | i don't get it. i loved Kezia and i loved Fortress even more, but this just... this just sucks! I can't get into it at all and I wish I could. Bump |
4.5 superb | STAR96 | June 5th 12 | I may be overestimating its true talent, but I see a lot of resemblances between Rody Walker, the front-man of Protest the Hero, and the legendary Freddie Mercury of Queen. Add to this some kick-ass guitar and bass riffs, along with average, while still pretty efficient drum lines, and you get ten work-of-the-art songs (eleven with the Japan-exclusive instrumental "To Porter with Love"). Every song on the album is simply impressive and this stands out even more when you listen to the album as a whole.

1.0 awful | thedougler | May 20th 11 | For those of you like myself who worshipped Kezia and Fortress this cd comes off as a big fuck you to fans and supporters alike. What made PTH interesting? Catchy riffs, interesting lyrics, soaring vocals mixed with harsh rasps and having it all thrown together never sounding stale. This cd from start to finish hurt my face. The first track "C'est la vie" was the only thing worth listening to and it would be a weak track on the previous two. The rest of the cd was awful lyrics and filler songs that pass by easily. I miss the old Protest.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | MrFantasticManny | May 17th 11 | PTH continues to progress farther in to the "prog" category highlighted in Fortress. Scurrilous manages to be even more technically capable, featuring complex structure featured within song lengths that dont go on farther than they are welcome.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Isaacbean | May 11th 11 | This band never ceases to amaze me, but this album is not their best material, but it is fantazmical nonetheless. Some of the songs start sounding similar after awhile, and Rody seems to have lost some direction in his voice.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | OMGitsBRIEN | April 27th 11 | Kezia was the conception of everything I love about Protest the Hero. It had great riffs, song structure, melodies, and lyrics and perfectly combined the lighter and heavier sides of the band. Fortress repeated this with improved musicianship and a shift in focus from hardcore to the prog metal elements reminiscent of their influences in Dream Theater and Symphony X. Scurrilous again takes another step in this direction with the most notable improvement in Rhody Walker's vocal attack which is almost devoid of all the screams, growls and shrieks that made up the schizophrenic nature of the band's past two efforts. Unfortunately PtH's frontman is a double edged sword. Taking over the lyrical responsibilities from bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi, Walker takes his chance to step into the poetic spotlight. And it works half the time, but never fills the gaping hole left by Arif's voice. Protest the Hero are a great metal band, but their narrative lyrics with socio-political subtext was what always set them apart from their peers. Rhody sings about heartbreak and women and does a fine job at it, but I can't help but miss hearing tales of condemned saviors and forgotten gods.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | JonJon0210 | April 13th 11 | I'll admit that this is arguably their weakest album, but if so, only slightly. I love this album. I love Kezia. I love Fortress. Yes, there is a LOT of Rody, which is one of slight two turn-offs (the other being the lack of a concept). But this is just the band exploring their abilities outside of concept artists.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | badmojo666 | April 3rd 11 | After reconsidering, I've realized my initial opinion of this album was a little biased. I came to this album prepared to be jerked around and constantly surprised by the sudden twists and turns the songs usually took on Kezia. Instead, what I got was a structured, but equally as intense experience.
Bump |
4.5 superb | kfeener1 | March 24th 11 | I miss the screams, and the lyrics are goofy in some songs but Protest the Hero have been consistently blowing my mind with their technicality and ability to write catchy, fun, and enjoyable music.

4.0 excellent | jarheadchad | March 22nd 11 | They kinda screwed themselves with the creation of the masterpiece "Fortress". They couldn't touch that album as far as catchy riffing and choruses, but they came closer than any band possible on this new record. Clean vocals have improved a ton, as well as production. There is a lack of screamed vocals and heavy riffing, as well as a vast amount of stupid lyrics, but overall another excellent album by this band. They still got it.
Bump |
3.5 great | ProtestTheLegacy | March 15th 11 | Everything wrong with Fortress was more or less fixed here, though it comes at a cost of consistency in favor of even more experimentation.rBass is more audible and prominent, and gets more classic Arif magic. Rody is sassier than ever, which you can definitely hear in his newly penned lyrics. Moe has some really impressive spot on drumming here, and of course, Tim and Luke have excellent guitars as usual. Incredible technique. Still some things they could touch up here and there, but Scurrilous is a great record.

2.5 average | antigodoflife | March 11th 11 | I tend not to compare a band by it's previous efforts but this is a special case, the album 'Scurrilous' compared to 'Kezia' and 'Fortress' is a horrible mess. The lyrics are dreadful, the instrumentation is sloppy (for Protest the Hero's standards), the vocals is basically Rody relentlessly stabbing you in the ear for 44 minutes without remorse or variation. The album as a whole is practically the same damn song repeated over and over and over again with barely enough variation between tracks to be considered 10 different songs and it is such a struggle to get through it all. A rumour going around was. there were originally more songs but they were removed from the album for not being a high enough quality compared to the rest of the album, I hope I never have the displeasure of listening to them, if what's on the album are the quality tracks. The only reason I have given this an average score is because when I listened to 'C'est La Vie' for the first time last month, I thought it was the worst PtH song I had ever heard but it's grown on me and I enjoy it like I do their previous efforts and I expect the same from the other songs on 'Scurrilous' with time and a few listens.

Bump |
4.0 excellent | ShinXetsu | March 9th 11 | This album showcases a different Protest than we've grown accustomed to, instead of embracing full on growth in their songwriting a la Kezia to Fortress, the band takes a step to the side and allows Rody Walker a bit more freedom in what appears to be their most comfortable album yet, jam packed with all the original (if overbearing) technical wank you could ask for. 2.5 average | sexpoi | March 9th 11 | As much as i wanted this to be great, i just can't bring myself to like the album as a whole. Yeah, C'est La Vie was good, but if it's honestly the best song on the album (which it is) then u shouldn't release it as the single and make everyone think your album is gonna sound like that. I've listened to this a few times hoping it was a grower but alas, I came up empty and sad on the inside, realizing that a band was once on the top of my list can't top their best album; therefore, rendering them stagnant. I hope you can real me in on the next one guys, but for now I will occasionally listen to C'est La Vie for glimpses of what this album could have been

And I don't think PTH hit their mark with going one step further (As the progression from ACUOS -> K -> Fortress ->)rEvery band writes a 'meh' album after a brilliant one. Then they go on to create an excellent one. Metallica. Dream Theater. etc.

3.5 great | itchy | March 4th 11 | One of the key things that allowed me to warm up to the sometimes abrasive/annoying vocals of Rody
Walker were all the damn catchy and memorable vocal lines and the frequency with which new and fresh
sing-alongable melodies were presented.
These stick-in-your-head moments permeate nearly every song of Kezia and Fortress, and are devastatingly
absent in Scurrilous, which leaves their third effort with little redeeming value for me.

Bump |
2.0 poor | OllieS | February 25th 11 | My initial problem with this album was that it sounded too similar to Fortress. My problem now is that it's worse than Fortress; it's almost like they wrote this before Fortress and then did an improved version, which turned out to be Fortress. The worrying signs on Fortress of the band becoming more technical at the expense of improving songwriting is proven true, as the songs are filled with more arbitrary time changes and lack direction in general. My issue is really how this happened: complex songwriting like what the band try to do successfully has been achieved on albums like Kezia; how did they somehow make their songs have less direction as time went on? Another issue is the abysmal lyrics, which are so poor they don't merit discussion. Also, the over-production which was creeping into Fortress blossoms here; the mix is so bloated I find the album hard to sit through in one sitting. The only positive note to be made is the first two tracks.

3.0 good | Klekticist | February 24th 11 | Will keep listening in hopes that it grows on me. I can't make it through more than a few songs without browsing for something else. Tastes change.

3.5 great | vakuola | February 23rd 11 | If there's a band that knows how to deliver quality wankery music, that's Protest The Hero, this time they took everything they are hated for, and they pushed it to the limits. In terms of quality, this album slays just like their previous two, while sounding more melodic. The thing is, how "original" is Scurrilous in comparison to Kezia?
