Business as usual for Moonsorrow as they proceed to make all other 'viking metal' bands look like a joke, even if it's not as varied as previous offerings. 2011's looking good.redit: TheSpirit/Brandon I bumped your sound off bro :]

For those who know Moonsorrow, Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa won't be too much of a surprise, simply because it doesn't change a whole lot from Moonsorrow's already firmly established style. Even though the band have left the notion of Vikings behind in favor of a post-apocalyptic theme that was also present on V: Havitetty, their core sound remains the same. For those who have always disliked Moonsorrow, their opinions will not be swayed, and purists who cage themselves in the realm of only the most "serious" black metal business need not apply either, lest they wish to senselessly vent their anger. For those who want an engaging folk black metal record that is not only solid in its composition and execution but also a hell of a good time to listen to, Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa provides that and more. Ville Sorvali's vocals are as sharp as ever, the song structures continue to pile riff after riff into an increasingly epic mountain, and the overall theme of the album is unwavering throughout. Take all that and wrap it in an excellent production that incorporates the bass well in the mix and drops the keyboards back so they contribute wonderfully to the atmosphere without strangling you with their oppressiveness and you have an album that knows what it wants to do and gets it done, a trait Moonsorrow have displayed for many years.

Folkish black metal, or blackish folk metal. Either way, it mostly rocks. The riffs, coupled with great production and emanating viking epicness, make this not-very-diverse album a one-hour journey. Not their best record, but proving once more you're a great band is always cool.

This album starts and ends with the same riff, and everything in between is epic and very well done. Each song has something special, but this album reveals its true nature when listening it from start to finish and judging it as a whole. Great theme album.
