It’s nothing to phone home about, but their third album is the first on which they realize their potential as something more than a disjointed back-and-forth of rehashed Bach licks and shitty hooks. Midheaven was a disaster but with a new vocalist (From First to Last’s Travis Richter) and their old guitarist (Nocturne‘s A.J. Minette), the Human Abstract has managed to craft a pretty solid, surprisingly heavy tech-metal album.

Winning. In every sense of the word. A brilliantly pieced together ensemble of meticulous meanderings escalating to complex climaxes. Better than Nocturne in style and structure. Far beyond anything Midheaven tried to accomplish. If Digital Veil indeed was trying to re-invent or re-solidify The Human Abstract than yes, this is their masterwork.

Definitely a return to form. The production is tight, the songwriting is very dynamic, heavy yet melodic, and it'll make any guitar player giddy with joy. There's counterpoint lines on this album that would make even Bach jealous.

After a disappointing follow-up to one of my favourite albums, I was really hoping that THA could come back and knock one out of the park again. Long story short: they did. Digital Veil is simply amazing, and after releasing an epic fourteen and a half minute long bonus track, (bringing the album up to over 50 minutes) I don't cry myself to sleep anymore wishing it were longer!

So it is now quite unfortunate that The Human Abstract, cause as you can see with this album, they really were something special. As for me, I had only even known of them for maybe 3 weeks when I finally picked this up. It is an awesome album. Many don't like Travis Ritcher, for many didn't think his clean vocals were all that, I'd have to disagree but that's just me. He does an excellent job throughout. This album has a bit less abuse of the arpeggios that Nocturne had but they are prevalent. The whole record as a whole is heavier, more beautiful and imminently more impressive. All members of the band are great throughout. My favorite song, Complex Terms has some extremely sweet guitar parts and is composed beautifully. The whole album is, pick it up you won't be disappointed.

Fuck, I loved Nocturne, hated Midheaven, just like everybody else. Yet, I cannot get into this. The cleans are ridiculously monotonous and the guitar work is nothing special as well. I'd just like to hear a good RIFF once in a while.

Neoclassical prog metalcore: I thought it'd be too much, but turns out it kinda is but not that much! The noodling 'n' doodling is sweet, the clean vocals aren't adolescent-y (!!!), and the povnding moments do povnd. The only thing that refrains me from liking this more is the rather sketchy songwriting, parts succeeding one another (way) too fast. Some moments are cool but are immediately replaced by another cool, but totally different moment.

This is a good album. Way better production that the previous albums, return to their more classical roots & new signer with an interesting voice and screams (Clean vocals not as on point as the previous signer IMO tho).rThe issue I have with this album is, I don't feel like listening to it over again, it was a good listen, but that stops there. I can't quite say why, but besides having nice riffs and melodies, I feel like the album lacks passion overall.

Not sure how it's taken me so long to getting around to rating this bad boy. It is my solemn opinion that Digital Veil should stand in the pantheon of prog metal. The record flows wonderfully, juxtaposes heavier passages to clean-filled verses superbly, and rewards the listener on each listen. I'm fond of saying that The Human Abstract are like BTBAM if BTBAM quit trying so hard and simply tried to make a great-sounding album. And this is all coming from a huge BTBAM fan! Good god I love this album.

Now *this* is more like it! Midheaven was the point in The Human Abstract's career where the band was starting to lose focus; it wasn't entirely bad, though the absence of A.J. Minette was beyond saddening. All of a sudden comes Digital Veil rushing to save THA from obscurity and becoming a slight laughingstock due to Nathan Ells, whose position as frontman had been taken over by the more confident Travis Richter. While you could argue that the group's third full-length is a continuation of the fun Nocturne, I'd say this is more or less a new chapter of hope.

Am I the only one who prefers Midheaven over this? At least that had some enjoyable songs, despite the spoken vocals and ballads trying to ruin it. This, aside from the title track, is just a boring, energetic-less waste of time. The new vocalist is a great with the harsh vocals, but his cleans are so weak, which explains why I like the title track to most. A.J. decide to do two things: wanky and chugging. The other guys are alright, but nothing spectacular. The album is just so boring, aside from some brief, fleeting moments of enjoyment such as the "their eyes!" part of Antebellum. Waste of talent.

Great instrumentals, excellent soloing, unique classically-tinged take on metalcore. Now all we need is some interesting songwriting. Apart from the massive highlight "Faust", the album mostly blends into a continuum of arpeggios, chugga-chugga and start-stop double bass. There's good riffs to be found for sure, but one wants for a more dynamic, ups-and-downs experience.

It takes A LOT for an album to be incredible to me, but this is definitely, and without a doubt, the best album of 2011, hands down. There is a lot of great, amazing really, stuff out there, but the riffs from the guitars, the way the songs are timed, and the way the lyrics are presented is just phenomenal. Simply their best, and simply THE best record of 2011.

Initially I rated this a four. Perhaps I had succumbed to the 'everything is relative' phenomenon. Digital Veil is infinitely superior to Midheaven. Travis Richter is infinitely better than Nathan Ells. Digital Veil is the Mona Lisa to Midheaven's Crayola scribbles. Digital Veil is a masterpiece when compared to the garbage that is Midheaven. But, ultimately, Digital Veil is only good.

I'm not familiar with their older stuff, but Digital Veil is a lot of fun. Most 'technical metalcore whatcha-ma-callit' strikes me as superfluous and gimmicky, and yes, Digital Veil can sometimes stumble and meander into this like a bad habit, but for the most part, the songs feel intentful, and the band seems to be on the verge of something quite unique and separate from their gimmicky peers. There aren't a lot of "memorable" moments, but the entire thing is generally a pleasure to listen to. The band is melodic, tight, and the classical influences are more than a gimmick, and are actually the bands strongest element. In general an impressive, promising album, if a little unfulfilling. There are parts that justify more than a 3.5, but serious flaws hinder it.

A vast improvement from Midhaven, although almost anything they would have done would have been a vast improvement. Travis' vocals work for the band, but the cleans don't mesh as well as they did with Nathan in Nocturne. The instrumentation is still there and the band sounds great, but the song writing isn't as strong as they displayed in Nocturne. Too much emphasis on trying to make these all encompassing epics and they more than often fall short. Digital Veil is good, but they've got still got a ways to go before they get back to the strength and cohesiveness they had on Nocturne.
