Let's promote the savage internet beating of Babyss. And by internet beating I mean a lethal barrage of harrowing insults so as to avoid legal ramifications of the internet. Fuck yourself Babyss, your credibility is shot and im taking you down piece by piece for calling Amon Amarth mediocre. rAlbum slays, it's classic Amon Amarth with a few new tricks up their sleeve. Album is heavier, more dynamic, and less commercial than their predecessor, not too mention super epic. Songwriting is catchy, as per usual, and random synth lines and System of a Down covers cannot detract from the records awesomeness. THOSE SOLOS MAN... Who needs to drown on the pity party, Amon Amarth is here. get the album. Dont be a faggot like Babyss who im going to troll furthermore until his eventual resignation.

It's samey, yes, but hell it works, and well at that. It's heavy, fun, and preposterously epic. And seriously, the album art owns.

The first album since the success of their breakthrough Twilight of the Thundergod. Surtur Rising kicks things off with the thrashing fury of War of the Gods. Not before long, the melody comes in and becomes the center of the assault. The next song, Tocks Taunt, is much slower. However, this pleasant change of pace is quite enjoyable, more melodious speed in this song, which isn't a bad thing. Destroyer of the Universe may be the fastest song Amon amarth's ever recorded. This tune starts off with fury and refuses to die down until the end of its near four minute fare. Slaves of Fear is another slower song with an insane riff to start out, then begins to speed up with the melody before slowing things down just to speed up again! These Vikings play Live Without Regrets like its their life motto, fast and injected with more melody, this song kicks ass! The Last Stand of Frej is, I believe the albums weakpoint. It has slow and repetitive riffs throughout. For Victory or Death is just a solid kick-ass tune with brutal lyrics and some keyboards as well. Wrath of the Norseman is a headbanger from start to finish, great riffs and guitar leads. A Beast I am is yet another savage thrasher that pounds the listener into submission as a Viking would his opponent! Doom Over Dead Man is perhaps the best song on this eleven song album. With a very dramatic feel and an awesome storyline as well. This song eventually begins a riff for the ages, it may very well be the best riff of the year! The cover of Aerials is a bit odd, but works well with Johan's brutal vocals.

Surtur Rising‘s cover tells you all you need to know about the album. On it, a skyscraper sized warrior takes a flaming sword to an army of lesser soldiers. Oh, and he’s standing in front of an erupting volcano, a perfect metaphor for the band’s fire-y, Valhalla worthy eight album. Does it sound exactly like every other Amon Amarth album? Yep. But since when is that a bad thing? It’s 48 minutes of catchy-but-heavy death metal done right, and despite its similarities to everything they’ve done in the past, it manages to best 20082s Twilight of the Thunder God with considerable ease. I can’t explain it either

Amon Amarth manage to create a middle ground, between the raw intensity of Fate of Norns, the greater complexity of With Oden On Our Side, and the accessibility of Twilight of the Thunder God. The result is a truly devastating album, packed with savage riffs, brutal vocals and epic solos. One of the best albums of the year so far, Surtur Rising is not for the faint of heart, and is possibly the band's most solid release yet, sure to catapult Amon Amarth to greater heights of unexpected success in their long and distinguished extreme metal career.

I have to update this sound off due to the gentle reactions by some people here. Initial post: not again! Instead of spending tons of money in promoting these mediocre guys, give the money to Japanese earthquake victims! 
update: 1) Amon Amarth use extremely common chord progressions and their performance is average. Their sound is not original since bands like At The Gates have played exactly the same things 15 years ago. But their lyrics were not epic.
2) Amon Amarth used to play the same mediocre things lots of years ago but suddenly their label spent tons of money in order to promote these guys. ...And suddenly a miracle happened, everyone started listening to these guys. They are the perfect example of hype and brainwashing. Their ads were everywhere, in myspace, in terrorizer, in zero tolerance, everywhere, And all of a sudden, everyone liked them even though they played the exact same things in their old albums (when they were unknown).
Your taste is not based on your actual taste, it is based on the label's campaign. You can not judge, thus you like everything that they serve you
3) If this album was released by a band from Panama, everyone would say it is cheesy as hell and lacks originality.

Long time no see, Amon Amarth. You still deliver the bangerz, which isn't a surprise. But you're no surprise. You might well be the least surprising metal band around. But that doesn't prevent you from having a solid fanbase, thanks to your Viking aesthetic (nerdz) and your easy-listening melodeath that everyone likes at 15 before slowly moving on. This is still, unsurprisingly, solid, if a tad too monochrome, especially towards the end.

Surtur's Rising is more of the same glorious death metal that Amon Amarth has been playing
since the release of 1998's -Once Sent from the Golden Hall; this album isn?t good nor bad .
I mean; it's not as if Amon Amarth fans were expecting intricate experimentation or a change
of direction; they were looking for something epically brutal, vikingly glorious, and most
of all they were looking for another Amon Amarth album (Norsemen Included.) So in the end
this is just another high replay-value release from the quintessential Scandinavian
melodeath band. Who cares about experimentation; clean vocals, symphonic arrangements,
flutes, abstract songwriting, varied tempo.. Whatever. This is Amon Amarth and it
definitely owns. If you were looking for the things mentioned above go listen to Nightwish
instead because imo this Vikings are very far from a downward spiral. Surtur's Rising might
be at the very least 25% original, but it is high quality fun as always...

Surtur's Rising is more of the same glorious Death Metal that Amon Amarth has been playing since, around mid 1997 i think, with the release of 1998's -Once Sent from the Golden Hall , it's good and bad , I mean , it's not like the self proclaimed "Viking Metalhead's" are searching for something new, they're looking for something Epic , Glorious and heavy ,Norsemen Included. So at the end of the day it's just another high replay-value release from the ultimate Scandinavian Melodeath band. It's about time for experimenting , clean vocals , symphonic arrangements , flutes , different song structures , tempo.. whatever, AA is far from a downward spiral, it's 25% original , high quality fun as always...
