A truly classic album. The songs on the first side are towering, massive souding and menacing. The synths lend cold, spacey atmosphere on the more guitar or sax based songs but when they come to the forefront of tracks like "Beauty and the Beast" and (my personal favorite) "Blackout" they lend frantic intensity. Bowie's vocals sound like someone is strangling emotion out of a stone. The title track "Heroes" is one of the most moving love songs I've ever heard, with Bowie's surprisingly warm, hopeful vocals escalating into a passionate, agonized wail. The second side of the album is equally satisfying, full of instrumental pieces that are utterly hypnotic.

Much preferred this to Low. Mostly for the instrumental tracks. Whereas Low tried to is a little all over the place, even though it displays great production, Heroes is so peaceful, going very well with the ambiance an themes of the album. Plus, there's Heroes on there, one of the greatest songs ever written, so, a little bonus.

Yeah, so you've got the title track. It's Bowie's greatest work and perhaps the greatest love song ever written but let's go beyond that because its straightforward, open-hearted nature makes it a real outlier on this album that draws together varied soundscapes. 'Beauty and the Beast' is decadent S&M Berlin, 'Moss Garden' an ancient Greek myth soundtrack, 'V2 Schneider' a dance-off for the machines and 'Secret Life of Arabia' a creepy red herring.

Covered in ashen confetti are two figures known simply as the Beauty and the Beast, and you can't say no to either of them. The man who sold the world looks at them from the skies above; this being was English singer-songwriter and actor David Bowie, who passed away a blackstar (he wasn't a gangstar). A little over two months have went by since his unfortunate death, and here I am pondering the contents of Bowie's twelfth studio album. Titled "Heroes", the record was the second chapter of Jareth's Berlin Trilogy with Brian Eno on board. An extremely passionate and interesting effort, both halves of this 1977 lion have many strengths and very, very little in the way of issues. The wide range of instruments utilized gives "Heroes" well-earned color, while Bowie's vocals are pristine and unmistakably ooze with personality. Beyond that, I honestly don't have much else to say about how good the general quality of the recording is. So many classy bangers are to be experienced here, especially the title track and instrumental songs such as "Sense of Doubt," and "Moss Garden". There exists old wave, new wave, and then there lied David Bowie. 1947-2016

It would be impossible to expect the rehabilitated Bowie to continue in the same vein as "Low" and produce an album quite as important. Where its predecessor served as the conduit by which sad kids in London could learn about the wild experiments being spilled out on the german vinyl their local record stores didn't carry (they carry it now), "Heroes" was Bowie's chance to take his new penchant for the avant and make it his own. You know, Bowify it. For the most part, he succeeds. The title track is just about his greatest achievement. Robert Fripp strangles from his guitar what could be the most ephemeral sound ever put down on tape while Bowie delivers and inspired reading of his surprisingly human poetry. There are places in "Blackout" and "Joe the Lion" where it feels like the record might explode. Genuinely. That's right, genuine Bowie. Drinks on me. The ambient stuff on side two is in no way groundbreaking, and of course Eno's behind most of it, but it's still beautiful. "Moss Garden" is a highlight, on the album and in the genre. No, Mr. Stardust, you haven't fooled me into thinking your mess of a vocal performance on "Sons of the Silent Age" is some kind of an artistic statement, but you have privileged us with some truly stellar tunework. An excellent follow-up to 'Low', 'Heroes' improves upon its first half with classics like the title track and "Beauty and the Beast" while retaining the beautiful ambient tracks on the second half.

Heroes, for all it's differences, is essentially more of the same and that's precisely why it shapes up as a fantastic record. It presents a slightly more optimistic and refreshing slant on Low's formula for those who couldn?t stomach its icy, fractured melodies, whilst still sounding similar enough to its predecessor to be hailed as the natural successor to what Low blueprinted. It may not gather as much credit as Low, simply because that album came first, but over the years it's received the mass of critical acclaim it ultimately deserves. And rightly so, as Heroes is just as thrilling and essential as Low, managing to shake things up just enough to separate itself from its similarly outstanding older brother, resulting in yet another glistening highlight in Bowie's extensive catalogue of genius.

There are only a few perfect albums, "Heroes" being one of them. The original electronic album that carried a sweeping, moving electronic backdrop on top of Bowie's more eclectic older pop nature makes "Heroes" perhaps the best album ever made in rock music.
If you listen to "Heroes", the album still sounds surprisingly modern to today's standard. The title track's swooshing and sweeping electronics and howling guitars trace Bowie's roots, mixing Ziggy with his future endeavors, putting forth the perfect mixture of Bowie's versatility and influences. A true masterpiece.
