After somewhat descending into the realm of more basic song structures on their volatile 2009 release Pray For Villains, Devildriver have returned to the intensity and fury that defined their earlier works (and this is of course working under the impression that they in fact, didn't release a self titled debut album. Because they didn't). Beast finds the group playing to the absolute pinnacle of their strengths; the guitars are still a raging torrent of noise and chaos, and the drums still hit like a blitzkrieg attack. Dez remains the only weak point of the group though; it's not that he's by any means a terrible vocalist, but there are more than a few occasions on the record where he seems to get himself lost in the music, constantly trying to play catch up with the turbulent musical background. His lyrics are still almost passable, except when he reveals a penchant for remote viewing and drops the gem: "I don't even know you and I still fucking hate you", hmmmmm.
Needless to say, it's another solid and hell raising addition to one of the most consistent discogs in the current metal scene. The only major factor against the album is the lack of progress, and the way the tracks tend to bleed into one another before too long. Granted that this has always been the case for the band, but here it's a little more noticeable, and sadly, just a little more immediate. But any album that makes me want to get drunk, fight and fuck in that order is okay in my book

Another boring DevilDriver record that sounds like all of their other material. This band is the musical equivalent of a Cepheid variable star: predictable.

More lackluster songs on here than any other DevilDriver record. Pray For Villains had very little, and Last Kind Words had none. I admire the new found technicality but their attitude seems to have dried up a little bit. It's starting to get a little boring, but not totally. I only hope they put out something a bit better in future.

Dom Lawson put it best when he referred to Beast as rolling bulldozer like over the featherweight skulls of the fashion obsessed metalcore millions. This raw and uncompromising metal of the highest quality that should crush everything in it's path

This record is such a creeper. I don't mean in the way that after a few listens it opens up its vast glory to you because of some new understanding. This record gets slabbed as boring by a lot of people, but if you take in each song and appreciate the subtleties, it really does bloom. The music creeps, man.
