Incredibly underrated album that in my opinion, is as good as Diary. Just listen to Killed By An Angel, The Ocean, or Faces In Disguise.

Even if one doesn't particularly think it's that spectacular, you have to respect Sunny Day Real Estate's concentrated effort to change and expand their sound from the midwestern emo and alternative rock combo of Diary and Sunny Day Real Estate to the art rock, indie rock, and even slight progressive rock of The Rising Tide. You could hear it change somewhat on How It Feels To Be Something On, but certainly not to the extent heard here. Some of these things can come off as bland or half-hearted, and it doesn't possess the same dreary, melancholy atmosphere as their earlier records. The lack of a standout track also hurts the record, allowing the bleeding of songs into one another much more than they should be. Still, most of the songs here a really solid stuff, and if you couldn't get in to their earlier stuff, this is unlike any other record of theirs, and that alone should be enough to give it a shot.

Not the same band that did Diary, but still an entirely enjoyable listen. An acceptable closer to such an influential band's career, but I'm sure I'm not the only listener with a lingering hope in their heart for just one more album. 3.7/5

these guys never put out a bad album and while this one may not be as strong as some of their others it's definitely still a great album. the ocean alone makes this cd worth picking up.
