Varg is on shaky ground with this release. Only a couple tracks stand out and there is only
one (the final track) that possesses something Burzum has not done before. This is nowhere
near as good as what Burzum has done, but also nowhere as bad as his worst.
P.S. I really enjoyed Belus.

Not feeling it, after a weak dark ambient intro we settle in for an almost non-distinctive ride to the album which came before it (one I liked but didn't think was anything particularly special to begin with), save for the final track which is an impressive array of ethnic sounding percussion on first listen but after dragging on for a minute or two sounds an awful lot like Zoviet France if they didn't know how to flesh their sound out to create the atmospheres of which they are capable of. The parts I found weakest on Belus are what Varg seems to be wanting to expand on here, and whilst a samey nature is not necessarily a bad thing to me when it comes to black metal the ho-hum "I could really be listening to something like this but better" feeling I get from every single moment of Fallen makes it a repetitive and unappealing experience.

Fallen is the only Burzum release that I enjoy. I guess that means I suck or something.

Some may say that Fallen lacks the "Darkness" that was surrounding us in the earlier releases, or that the album's production/mixing is a bit more modern than what it should have been..
I disagree with both, neither does Fallen bring out any unfamiliar feeling, nor does it lack the typical "primitive" Burzum production. With chaotic/slow/Doom-ish passages on tracks like 'Enhver til Sitt', or completely vicious(in contrary to typical Burzum) and unexcpectedly fast riffs on 'Vanvidd',Fallen is a release that no Black Metal fan should miss listening to. I'd also like to note a couple more things.
I am a big fan of Burzum and i have to admit that i was not sure wether i liked this new release or not, though it only took me once to go through the album again and i was convinced. With an outro that induces complete claustrophobia, the package is complete.
4/5 is well deserved here.

A monumental failure if there ever was one, Varg continues to ruin the Burzum legacy and pump out turd after turd of derivative material which are only mere shades of the vital essence of his earlier work. If I didn't know better I would think he's picked up on the trends of the modern BM scene and this is some sort of marketing ploy against idiot hipsters who eat this rubbish up, but the biggest problem I have with both Belus and Fallen is that my conception of "definitive" Burzum is changing, in light of his recent material it has become evident he has always been a hack who just happened to be in the right place at the right time. No fire, no patience.

Although not on par with his early releases, Varg releases an excellent album with solid material that is sure to please many fans.

It could not sound like 90s' Burzum, but this bad boy still got some atmosphere. The clean vocals particularly added to the witchery ambiance. Ok release, but a tad boring overall.

Fallen sees Varg trying to stray a bit from the original formula that made his original works known and appreciated. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on his fanbase. Those who enshrined his 90s works as the epitome of perfection will surely have a beef with this record, as can be seen with the ratings here. I am not in that category though, and I can appreciate a bit of experimentation provided that it is good. Unlike Belus, this record strays from the songwriting of his 90s works but goes back to using a more lo-fi production. Also, the atmosphere on this record is not triggered by ambient sound but by a more folksy approach. At times this seems to be a folk metal album. There are also, dare I say, catchy moments on this record, something not really common on a Burzum record. Plenty of highlights too, tracks 2-4, particularly track 2 Jeg faller has a damn catchy melody and track 7, which is almost progressive for Burzum standards. Bottom line, there is less black metal here than on his previous records (excluding the prison-albums) and this pretty much shows that Varg started to gradually move away from black metal. This is his best post-prion work.
