It's hard to believe how many classic beats in the west coast vault are from solely this album. Needless to say, Dr. Dre's production on this is some of the most immaculate and consistently excellent in west coast hip-hop. This of course including, but not limited to, "The Watcher" with its sparse horns and thudding drums, "Still D.R.E." with its unmissable keyboard line, "What's The Difference" with its intimidating combination of horns and strings, "Forgot About Dre" with its biting string chords and unmistakable guitar line, and "The Next Episode", with its impeccably funky guitar line. Of course, the second half of the record does have some filler on it, bringing down the album from the incredible heights it had reached in the first, but it ends on a masterful note with "The Message", a heartfelt tribute to his late brother Tyree. The album also features wonderful guest verses and hooks from Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Hittman, and Kurupt, backing up Dre in spades and sounding like they belonged there. Seven years after The Chronic and the loud just as strong.

Dr. Dre is the embodiment of the west coast persona; riding round, shooting fully loaded glocks, fucking bitches, smoking weed, repeat. Dr. Dre helped make some of the West Coasts biggest stars, and on his, made superstar rapper Snoop D-O-Double-G. As a producer, he is among the best in hip hop, completing live orchestrations of samples instead of just taking the sample and then using it. With 2001, Dre is asking all of his newest buddies he helped make famous to help him loop his own album together, and boy do they do the job well. Guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Eminem, and Kurupt help make the album a west coast banger, while Dr. Dre continues his G-Funk genius, with each beat smooth and easy, while the production remains crisp and fresh-sounding. 2001 is another Dr. Dre wonder, and while it may not be quite as good as The Chronic, 2001 is an excellent hip hop album full of funky beats, excellent production, and fun as hell gangsta raps that will keep up for hours listening.

Dr. Dre's 2001 sparked a new brand of Hip-Hop music that would reign supreme for the next decade in a half, which is indeed impressive. But what isn't impressive is how tasteless this album is. But nonetheless, it is a fun listen once in a blue moon, just like any other guilty pleasure.

It's basically Dre coming back to address the haters after having been low-key for 7 years and saying: "Fuck y'all, Imma do me" in various different styles over 70 gorgeous minutes of top-tier beats. He may be historically one of the angriest, most chauvinistic assholes to ever grace hip-hop, but his talent as a producer is undisputable and on display here in dividends.

NANANANANA, IT'S THE MOTHERF*CKING D-O-DOUBLE-G (SNOOP DOOOOG!!). C'mon this album is great if you like hip-hop, and I'm not the biggest fan of the genre at all but these beats are too dope.

dear god, these beats. however many years pass, i can't imagine any person or trend (especially dre himself - i'm sure detox is RIGHT around the corner...) in hip-hop making this record sound dated. stylistically, of course, the content, features, and post-g funk bumping sound of these tracks many not exactly be "in," but everything sounds so lively and fresh that i'm confident in this album's ability to inspire and awe upcoming producers for decades to come.

I'm not incredibly big on this album but I remember listening to it when I was 11 and I still have sogns that I listen to. It was a good rap album but I can never stand the over ecessive swearing on a few tracks.
