Conor Oberst hasn't made a career of making happy music. His emotional, Bob Dylan-like emo/folk is dark and depressing; his voice often warbling and out of key due to pure emotion. Lifted of the Story Is in the Soil... is his prime achievement, lasting an epic seventy-five minutes and spanning thirteen songs, each one more deive of Oberst's pain and each one more desolate and disturbing than the last. Oberst's lyrics are often blunt and straight to the point, which makes them all the more terrifying. Quite frankly, I fucking love this album, so prepare yourself for a hot and steamy-fresh review in the future. In the meantime, pick-up Lifted or The Story Is in the Soil... as soon as possible.

Conor Oberst and company created something truly incredible here. Every single song is unique to the others but fills in the atmosphere impeccably. The mood sways back and forth but always with purpose, and every vocal performance is loaded with enough passion to elevate an occasional underwhelming lyric. Ambition will definitely not always lead to failure.

Album lost its spark very quickly. Some of my favourite Bright Eyes songs come from this album but as a whole, its pretty tedious.

This is without a doubt the album Conor Oberst will be remembered for when he is done making music. Every song on here is brilliant. It was with this album than Conor solidified his "new" Dylan tag and proved to everyone he could make a complete record that is both lyrically and musically perfect. Before this album Conor seemed to struggle with making the music match is lyrical brilliance. On Bright Eyes first record "Letting Off the Happiness" the music was quite weak and the entire record suffered from it. "Fevers & Mirrors" was certainly a step in the right direction as the music on that record better and it showed that Conor had an ear for good melodies, but it was with "Lifted..." that Conor perfected everything about the music he was making. If you're looking to get into Bright Eyes this is easily the place to start as it shows a time when Conor was on top of his game and could not be stopped.

When you think of Bright Eyes at his best what do you think? I personally think of: miserable, creative, sophisticated, unique, political, and free. These qualities are qualities that Oberst no longer possesses in his solo career, but all of these qualities were at their peak on "Lifted", one of the most epic indie/folk releases you will ever listen to. Oberst is miserable, creative, sophisticated, unique, political, and free on: "False Advertising", "Big Picture", "Let's Not Shit Ourselves", and "Don't Know When But A Days Gonna Come". On other tracks he just master one or two sides of the equation: on "You Will" he is miserable and romantic at the same time, on "Lover You Don't Have To Love" he is creative and unique, and on "Make War" he creates his best song of all time. I guess you can sum this album up in historical context and try to put its meaning in many words: but what it really is is Bright Eyes at his best.

now im a big fan of loud chaotic rocknroll, and even a 'lil bit o metal. but ive got my soft spot, and this cd hits it hard.
conor oberst is soo good its mad. this cd is poetry, and after listening to it youll begin to hear music differently.
few songs come close (lyric wise) to anything that bright eyes has done.
