Quite simply, Scary Monsters is a fantastic album - featuring stellar moments such as the frenetic, childlike nightmare, 'Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)', the beautifully constructed 'Teenage Wildlife', the glistening 'Up The Hill Backwards', and the top class pop delights of 'Fashion' and 'Ashes to Ashes'. At the time of its release it was fresh and exciting, and fortunately the years have done little to erode such sentiments. Scary Monsters would be the last classic album Bowie would release for a number of years, leaving one with a bitter final thought: if only the rest of the chameleon's eighties material was as golden as this?

Really weird how people remember Let's Dance while this album is by far the superior pop Bowie album. Also, shoutout to Ashes to Ashes, which is one of the best Bowie tracks OAT

This is Bowie's first album after the Berlin Trilogy, and although he's coming out of the coldness of these albums, he's not getting rid of the madness, even displaying harsher sounds than said trilogy. Scary Monsters is a striking link between the 70s and the 80s, an almost perfect balance of creativity and commercial success. It also was deeply fresh and contemporary, pushing the envelope of new wave and art rock. And Fripp's an MVP here.

"Low" was a weird great album. "Scary Monsters" tries to be a great weird album. Full of clutter and frippery like weird vocal performances, overly busy arrangements and jarring production, "Scary Monsters" is the first time Bowie missed the mark between experimentation and output.
