Honestly one of the few highlights of mid-2000's emo, which isn't saying much. Still, this album stands out as a genre highlight for me, though I may be biased by nostalgia

Objectively, or as objectively as music can be rated, this is probably not a 4.5. There are some akward and at times poor lyrics, heavy amounts of teen angst, some songwriting shortcomings, and a slew of other flaws, good as the music sounds. But it hooked me just right, at just the right time in my life, to forever be considered one of my favorite albums. Here's to nostalgia.

'New Medicines' is at times a beautiful record, but falls short in the end because of the bands' penchant for using similar guitar parts, the token inaudible bassist, over-reverbed screams, and similar vocal lines/melodies. On the plus side, the production on the album is stellar. All of the instruments are crisp and clear, and the drums (played adequately by Josh Shellabarger) have a great punch to them. Singer Brandon Rike has an awesome voice and although he doesn't hold up well live, he certainly records well. This brings me to the best part of the album: the vocal and lyrical content. Brandon is a good lyricist, except for a few stumbles here and there he delivers a great performance. His screams, however, have been reverbed and processed into the back of the mix, completely killing any tension released. Listening to the album, you can tell that Brandon has a sick, throat-shredding scream... maybe. 'Four Wall Blackmail' showed his prowess, but 'New Medicines' drops him back a rung on the "extreme vocalist" ladder. The album contains some of my very favorite Dead Poetic songs, including "The Dream Club Murders", "New Medicines", and "Glass in the Trees". These songs show Dead Poetic at their collective best; a beautiful yet punishing sound. Too bad 'New Medicines' isn't solid throughout; it may have helped them out more in the long run.
