Rainbow is a very much underrated band. In their early days, that is. Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio made an excellent pair musically, and put out a classic hard rock album with Rising. The only thing that prevents it from being a true classic is the length of 33 minutes, which ultimately falls short. However, it is most certainly worth a listen because of Dio's powerful vocals, which are on his best here, and Blackmore's phenomenal guitar skills. Too bad that these two men's egos couldn't be in one space, they could've made so many good stuff together.

You know it?s a perfectly fine record, it?s really fun, the lyrics are super weird, but if it?s your thing, good for you. I really respect it, because it kinda made template for other narrative driven albums and I can respect it. It has these crazy guitar solos, I really like the one in the opener with the stereo mixing, so if you?re looking for an easy to listen to, fun, rock record, really go ahead, I can?t recommend it enough. For me, it?s not something I really seek out, and I don?t think this is anything great enough that it deserves a spot on the 100.

An awesome album! I love the intro for Tarot Woman. It's a great way to open this album. My favorite song here is "Starstruck"

Catchy, beautiful and, most importantly, fun songs sung by Dio at his very peak. Mix that with Ritchie Blackmore's fantastic leads and riffs and a tight rythym and section and you've got one of my favourite albums of all time: Rising. Rainbow rocks.

Clinically executed and produced album with some great tracks led in by Tarot Woman and including Starstruck, Stargazer (if you ignore the lyrics) and great instrumental work on A Light in the Black. A personal pet hate is Do You Close Your Eyes which is why it doesn't get a 5

Rising is a bit overrated, especially when compared to the other Rainbow albums in the 70s. This is the weakest of the lot, which says a lot about the overall quality of their output at the time. Rising is far from bad, it just doesn't live up to its reputation.

4.5 including bonus points for Dio's vocals. Some songs in the middle are a bit weaker, but Tarot Woman and Stargazer are the huge masterpieces here and they up the rating a little bit. What we have here is early/proto heavy metal, depending on your perspective. You can feel the hard rock everywhere, but more often than not it's larger than hard rock, larger than life. Just like the cover. However, Rainbow has always been about individual songs, not album, for me.
