0.0 | Athom EMERITUS | November 4th 10 | Every previous Agalloch album has been a progression of the album that preceded it, but with Marrow of the Spirit it sounds as though they worked only within a comfortable and well worn niche. The end result is pleasant enough for a listen or two but because it only revisits ideas instead of reinventing them it fails to find a voice of its own

2.5 average | Kyle Ward EMERITUS | November 8th 10 | It's difficult to call Marrow Of The Spirit a wholly unique experience, and when compared to its attempt to incorporate multitude of influences, the final product comes up far short of expectations. The welcome addition of a sharper black metal edge is indeed a refreshing element, but unfortunately the creative fervor so present on Agalloch's previous releases is eerily absent. The riffs are stagnant; a fragment of the memorable melodies found on Pale Folklore or The Mantle. The classical guitar piece on "Black Lake Nidstang" is the only thing that even approaches unexpected in terms of the guitar department, the rest sort of holds back in humble restraint as the extracurricular inclusion of electronics, piano, cello, and nature samples drive the creative force of the album. Only a few simple guitar melodies on "Ghosts Of The Midwinter Fires" and "Black Lake Nidstang" and a handful of solos keep things afloat, as the overbearing and shameful nods at Godspeed You! Black Emperor in the closer "To Drown" reminds me of a mix between building post-rock epics and a bad Ridley Scott film. Couple that with an average vocal performance by Haughm, whose clean vocals appear momentarily in "The Watcher's Monolith" with a weakly performed verse (picked up only by the unexpected cries in "Black Lake Nidstang" that are reminiscent of depressive black metal) and whose rasps show little emotion, and you have an album that wastes incredible potential with recycled ideas masked by irregular shots at innovation and ingenuity.

5.0 classic | silkforcalde | November 5th 10 | Absolutely flawless, Agalloch leaps forward with another tremendous evolution of their sound. Much more percussive, with longer and more flowing songs. Also a far more diverse album than their previous affairs with radically different vocal styles. Their heaviest, densest, most ambitious work to date.
Also, the album is much less like Pale Folklore than the other albums. I'm baffled by people calling it a retread of Pale Folklore. Are you idiots deaf????

4.0 excellent | Iai EMERITUS | November 12th 10 | It's nice that, for once, I can step out of line with the rest of the staff by liking an album MORE than they do. This is a stunning album; for the third time in a row, Agalloch have followed up a genre classic with a records that's just a little bit better.

3.0 good | Wizard | November 8th 10 | Nov. 8, 2010 - Totally underwhelmed. Possibly the biggest let-down of 2010.
A week later, I must say that my opinion has drastically changed on this monstrously encapsulating experience. This is a grower and is true to every sense of the word!

0.0 | Bitchfork | November 8th 10 | When Crysis doesn't give this higher than a four you know Agalloch fucked it up. The atmosphere tires so fast (faster than Ashes) and its black metal bits are equally as unimpressive because they've been executed miles better by hundreds of other black metal artists. And yeah Kyle's right about the classical guitar interlude on "Black Lake Nidstang." So fucking good. That one moment kept this from being a 2 for me.

3.5 great | Zion | November 7th 10 | This not Pale Folklore. It is not The Mantle. It is not Ashes Against The Grain. It is not rThe White or The Grey for that matter (if anything, it's The Black). It's Agalloch, through rand through. There are moments of warm nostalgia and there moments that blow the roof off of reverything they've done before. Darker and less hospitable than prior journeys, but well rworth the risk.

5.0 classic | Waaltz | November 11th 10 | This is the most beautiful album I've heard in years. A 5/5 rating would somehow be
underrated as this album seems to cross multi-dimensional boundaries into profound meaning
and the deepest spirituality.
Technically speaking, the intelligent complexity of this album seriously exceeds anything
Agalloch has ever done. The melodies are overwhelmingly passionate and unique. The lyrics
are felt deep inside your soul.
But only your opinion matters. I recommend sitting alone in the dark and listening to the
album through. This isn't fast food music. The songs are all at least 9 minutes long and to
truly appreciate them you need to hear them whole with the album.

4.5 superb | Staker | November 25th 10 | Much more experimental than the last albums. They've really gone for it this time, far heavier, more atmospheric, more extreme - and it's not disjointed or inconsistent. It all works together as a coheorent album. Brilliant. Might even be my favourite.

3.5 great | Coketrain | November 10th 10 | I'm not so sure about this album yet. There's no song really standing out apart from the others. It might take me some time for it to grow on me, but so far it couldn't impress me at all. The album feels like it has a manic depression (like it tries to prove something)and fails to impress unlike the previous albums wich had a natural build-up. I should give it some more listens, but so far it feels like a drag and i get bored like 2/4 3/4 way in. r2,5 for the moment. Hope it grows on me since agalloch are one of my favourite bands and are able to compose great music.

5.0 classic | Alabaster Jones | January 1st 17 | After what was their most accessible album and a great record in its own right in Ashes Against The Grain, Agalloch had ran the gamut in terms of their known playing styles in their career. Where else to go? Regarding this, the band turned to the best of each of their previous styles and combined them into one captivating album, and in doing so made a career-defining and career-encompassing statement simultaneously with Marrow Of The Spirit. Though they do most certainly take pieces from their old styles, it would be misinforming to say that the record is a simple hodge-podge of the past. No, the album contains some of, if not the best songwriting in their discography, and no other album in their discography is as emotionally stunning and gratifying on a first listen. This isn't Agalloch fitting themselves into a niche; this is Agalloch being everything they are and were, with all the passion in their souls and some added experimental flair for good measure. Happy to say this was the album that brought me into the new year.

0.0 | HSThomas | April 28th 11 | Marrow was first written off by many for not being like the previous Agalloch albums. It
didn't have enough "surprises" as Crysis once said. This album though, was never meant to be
progressive, indeed it was designed to be reactionary to all of their previous efforts.
Whereas Agalloch's music before was introverted, requiring time to plunder its depths, here
it is far more extrovert in expression, laying all its secrets bare. By going back to their
routes, Agalloch have shown more than they've implied and as a consequence, it no longer
feels like a journey but an epic design of sorts. The harsher, rawer production blows open
Agalloch's formula into panoramic soundscapes. It sacrifices self-exploration in favour of
an album that encapsulates everything the band stand for. Sure, the album is not always a
cohesive whole; Black Lake Nidstang feels overlong and wrongly placed but if this album is
approached upon its own terms then it is arguably one of Agalloch's strongest efforts.

4.5 superb | eggsvonsatan | November 6th 10 | Not at all what I expected, but absolutely stunning. Very stripped, sincere, and true to themselves. Agalloch may turn people off with this one, because it doesn't go in the post-metal direction that they were heading, but a good surprise is well received, when its executed as well as this is.

4.5 superb | blackmetalhipster | October 17th 20 | I don't really get the harsh criticism this record gets, it took the sound of agalloch into a harsher and rawer direction again while maintaning the atmosphere and longwinded triumphant song structures of the other records. Especially the last song is pretty unique in agallochs discography and in my opinion plays out wonderfully

4.0 excellent | EasterInTheBatcave | June 10th 16 | There is a compelling atmosphere on here, and nice riffing ("Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires," "Into the Painted Grey"). (The section with wailed vocals in the middle of "Black Lake Nidstang" deserves special mention, as it is absolutely incredible.) However, closer "To Drown" doesn't really work-- it sounds like they tried for Godspeed-esque, but it's just uninteresting.

2.5 average | DoctorVelvet | December 1st 14 | It's definitely a grower album. This is Agalloch's darkest material and is accented very well by the album's warm, organic production. Musically, Marrow contains unique, satisfying moments but unfortunately, they're a bit too scattered. As well, the album is bookended by two unnecessary and tedious tracks, the first of which isn't that bad but the last track--To Drown--is almost completely unredeeming and if not removed from the album entirely, could have easily been cut down by 7 minutes.
Bump |
3.5 great | BRAman22 | May 20th 14 | The longest song got a bit too long for my liking, there were some pretty cool parts but also a lot of pretty dull ones; but other than that, the album is pretty solid as long as the first and last tracks can be considered the intro and the outro respectively.

3.0 good | Cavs | December 15th 10 | Most disappointing album of the year. It has some great moments of course, but overall it isn't nearly consistent enough, and just doesn't flow as smoothly as you would expect. Feels like they tried way too hard this time around... A 2 by Agalloch's standards, but this would have been a solid 3. 5 otherwise, so a 3 seems fair

0.0 | balcaen | December 10th 10 | this was so dreadfully boring, i almost cried. jk, but it was really boring. i kept waiting amidst the typical black metal growls and repetitive post-rock riffs for something interesting to happen and it never came, which made this album a very painstaking hour to listen to. ever now and then it would have a promising build-up to something (ANYTHING?!) and then it would either go on for ages or promptly stop and go into something else. develop your ideas, agalloch, goddamn.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | HereComesTheStorm33 | December 10th 10 | "Into The Painted Grey" is a hell of a song, but then the album fades into boringness in some parts. That would be really bad, if there weren't also some awesome parts. Those keep the album captivating until the end.
Bump |
3.5 great | lifter | December 1st 10 | I don't think it's reaches the level of their previous three albums, but it's still Agalloch. I absolutely love the nod to "Nattens Madrigal" that is the beginning riff of "Into the Painted Grey"--melancholic tremolo riff with a touch too much treble over fuzzy sounding, blastbeating drums and bass that are mostly inaudible. That haunting riff that seems to crawl slowly toward the heavens at 5:30 is the best moment on the album for me. For me it's the only Agalloch song on the album (please note that the intro wasn't composed by the group but by Grayceon's cellist) that organic flows and follows an interesting musical progression and doesn't sound pieced together from disparate elements.
Other than that it's pretty barren: there are some outstanding moments on "Black Lake Nithstaang," but "The Watcher's Monolith" and "Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires" sound like standard Agalloch fare, except with poorly recorded drums. Oh yeah, and "To Drown" is also on the album. Whatever.
Bump |
3.5 great | JWT155 | November 27th 10 | Being mostly a newcomer to Agalloch, I found this to be a very interesting record. Marrow of the Spirit carries a very somber atmosphere through its entirety and I find the Black Metal growls very fitting. Songs are long and take time to develop and progress but the band excels at letting their songs build to a climax, rewarding the listener and demonstrating that their tracks have a direction and are not just aimlessly written to fill up space. I find to fully appreciate this record you have to listen to this front to back and be patient with it; this did not click for me on the first listen but after a few spins I found an admiration for the small details littered across the record.
Bump |
3.5 great | Yazz_Flute | November 12th 10 | I don't know guys I like this a lot. The intro track is a little underwhelming personally but "Into the Painted Grey" is easily the most ferocious song Agalloch have ever done. And I enjoy how the guitar motif towards the end becomes one of the main melodies in "The Watcher's Monolith." "Black Lake Nidstang" sounds like Godspeed You! Black Emperor had a child with Varg Vikernes, while "Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires" sounds like a more modernized twist on Pale Folklore. Closer "To Drown" ends the album on a very unsettling note before fading into nothingness. Tentatively Marrow of the Spirit IS their weakest album but remember it's following three masterpieces. It's right in that 3.9-4 range for me. I don't know about you guys, but i'm wholly satisfied with it.
