A criminally underrated album. You've got the wild, primal poetess of 'Babelogue/Rock n Roll Nigger', the glorious, spectral artiste of 'Easter', the chart-smashing ode to spirituality and sex of 'Because the Night'. If "Horses" is the better album for its consistency and revolutionary impact, "Easter" is more noteworthy for its unexpected and wildly successful turns.

Be prepared for immense disappointment if you're coming to this immediately after Horses - it's quite simply nowhere near as good. Still, as poor an album as this is on the whole, it does have two considerable highpoints, the first being "Because The Night". It's Patti's biggest hit ever, and rightly so - even if the song was written by Bruce Springsteen, she makes it her own, pinning it down as one of the great proto-power ballads. The other is the ferocious "Rock'n'Roll Nigger". Outside of that.....well, "Till Victory" isn't too shabby, but "25th Floor" is boring, "Ghost Dance" is annoying, and the rest barely provokes any reaction at all. Hit and miss, to say the least.

easter is my favorite patti smith album...she can rock your ass off with songs like space monkey and rock and roll n*gg**and then turn your angry soul to melencoly with the passionette ballad we three.. JImmy iovine is the perfect producer for this album. the production element is simple but iintense not over produced like a lot of todays music. the band lead by the multitalented lenny kaye combines intellegent and catchy guitar riffs with bruces brody's beutiful and hauting keyboard solos. To let you know how much i love this album i lost it last week and stood in my music library looking frnatically for it for an hour. who knows where it went cd heaven??this reporter is stunned(thank you howard cosell). all i know is a week later its back in my collection and remasterd too with a bonas track....Maybe the good lord grabbed that copy for himself and sent this one to me...
