I was never that big of a fan of Alexisonfire, but this EP has kind of made me rethink my position.

Although Old Crows, Young Cardinals came out just last year, Alexisonfire have returned with an EP to please fans and possibly win over some new ones. Dog’s Blood is only 4 tracks but spans over 20 minutes with some rather lengthy songs compared to their back catalogue. Musically this is a more aggressive record then Old Crows and the vocals are a return to form for Dallas. This is not Watch Out! but leaves fans excited to see what is in store in the future.

Just by comparing this EP's cartoonish cover with the pristine look of Old Crows, Young Cardinals it's evident Dog's Blood is going to have a very different feel. The poppy hooks of "Born and Raised" and "Young Cardinals" are nowhere to be heard on this little album, substituted for the full-out aggression of punk riffs. The expected dark atmospheric sections are here, and they work even better than before.
This heavy feel is in part due to the notably diminished presence of Dallas' voice, and it's a welcome change. Slow jam "Grey" relies on George's hoarse delivery and the always dependable drumming chops of Jordan Hastings. On the following track "Black as Jet" he beats the snare so hard it sounds like the crack of whip. Redlining bass tone fills out the song, emulating the best possible output of destroyed speakers.
If you're pining for another Watch Out! don't hold your breath but this EP does combine some of the best elements of their last three records and shows growth in songwriting too. Approaching the ten year mark Alexisonfire has accomplished a lot, and Dog's Blood proves they're as good as ever.

This EP seems to be pensive, thoughtful and overall kinda meditative. I like this aspect. It reminds me of old Alexisonfire days like when 'rough hands' and 'happiness by the kilowatt' were their standouts. A good change for them and a huge step up from the mediocre 'Old Crows/Young Cardinals'. Let's see what the next full length can pull off .)

Alexisonfire are back baby! Most of the bs found on their latest LP seems to have been purged and what's left is vintage AOF. George's vocal tone is almost back to normal (except for 'Grey'), which is a great thing. A definite step in the right direction for Alexisonfire.

Kinda experimental for them, they mingle their traditional post-hardcore with some post-rock touches here and there (always nice) and also with a heavier/sludgier production. "Vex" is especially awesome.

To me, this EP seems like a quick attempt to apologize to the older group of AOF fans that were distanced after "Crisis" and "Old Crows/Young Cardinals" by producing a deliberately heavy batch of songs without having to commit to them (by releasing them on a full record).

Finally returned to this after a couple of years...it's actually pretty great. 'Grey' is one of the best songs the band has written yet. If a new album is ever on the cards and they went for this style, I wouldn't be disappointed.

This is an odd release, it is rediculously different from their other stuff. There's is a more grunge, melancholie and sludge feel to the riffs and the vocals have luckily gone back to their older ways. Perhaps it is a sign of whats to come and if it is, well... im very much anticipating the future album!
