3.0 good | wattsthedealio | May 11th 11 | About ready to give up on the forty-four song opus, I still continued downloading songs, one at a time, hoping for some small vision of classic Pumpkins to resurface. Second EP, The Solstice Bare starts off completely different with some more electro-rock influence (almost Tron Soundtrack-esque) and the line “Get on board, this train ain’t gonna stop. Where I’m going, I don’t know” on track “The Fellowship.” Then Corgan begs the question “Are you with us or against us tonight?” as almost a request to fans to keep the faith. I’ll admit I was interested and decided to hop on the train.
“Freak” is the first time I regained a feeling that the Pumpkins were not dead. The dirty fuzz of Corgan’s guitar accompanying his classic nasally voice never sounded so beautiful together, as he finally got his groove back and started sounding like himself again. “Tom Tom” starts off more like the first EP, but quickly busts into an oldschool Pumpkins singalong chorus that keeps me rocking through.
