A perpetual evolution. Having dispensed with adolescence with Zen Arcade, Husker Du now approaches adult situations on New Day Rising. On top of the maturity of the subject, the most distinctive aspect of this record is how slower the tempos are compared to their previous outputs, allowing for more extended melodies. Of course there were still moments of radiating fury, but the catchiness they always hinted at fully exploded on NDR. They were occupying an unexplored no-man's-land between hardcore noise and pure pop. Less ambitious, but also less bloated than Zen Arcade, New Day Rising is the second underground classic Husker Du released in six months. True 80s trailblazers.

Sharpens ideas explored on "Zen Arcade" without blunting the attack. That crack-thump-crack-thump that introduces the title track is the event horizon. It's too late. You're in. Has there ever been an opener so magnetic? Anyway, it's pop. The hardcore is gone, not that they didn't play hardcore-as-pop in the first place. They sorta take R.E.M.'s place in the underground, and you can hear it in Mould's superb guitar work. A bit less exciting in terms of innovations, but it's comfortable... listenable... a record to be loved in a way its predecessor never could be. 9/10

Husker Du had been sneaking pop influence into each release before this in varying amounts, but this album was where they really started to let it loose - merging melodic tunes with their trademark distortion and rawness made this album one of the most important stepping stones to what would become alternative rock in the 90's. But it's certainly not all bubblegum fun - especially the last 3 tracks, which are good attempts at melting face.

I realized I listen and enjoy it just as much as Zen Arcade, so in that respect it deserves a five. It just doesn't have as many classic moments as Zen, but whereas Zen has a few throw away tracks, this one has none.
