If you pretend Melody 8 doesn't exist, Tera Melos' self-titled release will floor you.

Tera Melos's Untitled (often cited as their eponymous release, or simply the Melodies) remains the best math record I've ever heard. With all four members well versed in jazz theory, the album is jam packed with irregular chord voicings, liquid time signatures, beautiful guitar phrasing and spazzy dissonant freakouts that makes each song as unpredictable as Kanye West at an award ceremony. Nick Reinhart grabs his motherfucking guitar by the neck and strangles the beast the whole time; I swear you've never heard double handed tapping until you've listened to this. Likewise, Vince's drum beats are consistantly unique and inventive, often stealing the show (see "Melody 3") with his... well, incredible drumming. No matter the amount of replays, this album still blows my mind with each listening.

Inside every Tera Melos song are about eight mini-songs, and the mini-songs have nothing to
do with one another. The music has very little logic, familiarity, or momentum. It careens
from one forgettable passage of guitar wankery to another completely unrelated passage of
guitar wankery. I could cut a section from each of them and sew these sections into a brand
new song, and that song would sound just as incoherent as all the tracks on this album. And
beyond the technicalities of song craft, I think this is a soulless record. Technical
proficiency should be merely a tool to create beautiful, emotional music, but on this
record, technique is not the means, but the end. I don't feel anything other than annoyed
when I listen to this.

It's math rock, but it's also a bit more than that. There's an underlying brutal prog sound reminding me of Hella, as well as some noise rock inspirations. The problem is the last 28-minute track, "Melody 8". I wanna pretend it doesn't exist then, 'cause the first 30 minutes are absolute bonkers, but hey they decided to include this noisy mess after so many sweet math rock tunes

I'll admit this didn't phase me at first; I thought it was too overly "jammy" and thought there was simply too much going on to keep me interested. But I kept listening to it, because two melodies in particular stood out: 3 and 4. Eventually, I kept moving on to the other ones; 5, 6, 7, and 2 in that order, and the results amazed me over time. Imagine The Fall of Troy stopped singing, played post-rock instead of post-hardcore, and gave every single song a different melody. The results do not disappoint.

Tera Melos is slowly becoming my favorite band, but after seeing them live for the first time on October 14th, I can't listen to the album anymore without thinking that it lacks energy. This is a great album, one of the best of recent times, most things are flawless, but this cannot be compared to their live show.
