The single greatest moment in the history of recorded music is on Head Held High when Lou yells out "EVER SINCE I WAS A BABY ON MY MAMA'S KNEE!" The rest of the album's pretty good too.

With the exception of "Sweet Jane", "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" and the delightful "Who Loves The Sun", 'Loaded' is a string of average, uninspired songs. The fact that Lou Reed was absent for much of the recording is partly an excuse for its lack of quality, but this also indicates that he perhaps covered up for the cracks in the rest of the band.

If the View compilations are transitions between White Light / White Heat, then Loaded is a transition to Lou Reed's solo albums. The Velvet Underground took sound of the third album (the self-titled) and turned up the volume a little bit, and also made the songs catchier. "Who Loves the Sun", "Rock 'n' Roll', and possibly their most famous song of all, "Sweet Jane" finally get the Velvets some radio play, and capitalize on the patented Velvet groove, despite Moe Tucker's absence and the replacement of Doug Yule's brother on the drums. The epic "Oh! Sweet Nothin'" that closes the album is not to be missed.

It's almost kind of unbelievable, Lou Reed and Co. are able to say goodbye with a surprisingly optimistic and beautiful sendoff to one of the best rock bands in the 60s.
