Easily one of my favorite Tull albums. Ian Anderson's flute and acoustic guitar, Martin Barre's guitar licks and I forget their names due to frequent lineup changes in the band but the bass, piano and drums are fantastic too. Any band who invents (or if they didn't, made it popular) such a wonderful, brilliant sound deserves a 5/5. This was overproduced in its time but sounds underproduced compared to today's standards. I really love that nice medium between the two.

Aqualung is a timeless classic demonstrative of the golden age of 70s progressive rock at its finest with expert musicianship, creative meaningful lyrics intertwining riff heavy cuts and folk. The heady theme of socioeconomic disparity opens the record and very much representative on the iconic album artwork. In addition overt contrasting of controlling organized religion versus personal theological beliefs is examined critically through Ian Anderson's lyrics. The breakout star here is Martin Barre and his exceptional guitar work.

The best strengths of this album are that it flows very nicely and the lyrical content is perfectly balanced with the music. The heavy riffing of the title track, for example, matches the brash lyrics perfectly, and Cross-Eyed Mary has the same going for it. The spiteful anger of My God and Hymn 43 is executed perfectly in this fashion as well. This is the closest to perfection the Tull would ever get.

As if there's really anything new to say about Aqualung. It's the first true culmination of the band's musical vision, perfectly combining progressive rock with folk rock in a way few have done before or since. It's equal parts electric and acoustic, and both styles come with their fair share of pop sensibilities as well. I for one appreciate how subtly and wonderfully sarcastic the record is. One example of this was woven into its own creation; it's a record mostly about ambivalence to religion, specifically Christianity, but was recorded in a converted church hall. I'm also pretty sure that the song "My God" is named so because that's exactly what the listener says to themselves when that unbelievable flute solo happens. Whether or not you prefer this, Thick As A Brick, or any other Tull record, it should be known: Aqualung was the first true step into making Jethro Tull a household name.

Love listening to it on vinyl. A few mediocre songs, but they are spaced in between amazing songs. Both sides are great (Aqualung, My God) & Ian Anderson's flute solos are amazing. Tull is one of the only bands to ever make the flute cool.
