One of the finest metal albums ever. Thanks to their frequent flirtations with jazz influences, Cynic are frequently lumped in Atheist, Gordion Knot and latter-day Death, yet even one listen to Focus is enough to demonstrate just how far beyond their peers this band was. The guitars are inventive, the fretless bass always outstanding, the songs themselves so good that it's easy to imagine them being covered, and impossible to imagine them being improved. Even the electronically manipulated vocals - an annoyance at first - eventually reveal themselves as a crucial part of the sound. It's a complex, technical record that displays a rare flair for songcraft, given the genre. Picking highlights would do a disservice to the album as a whole - needless to say, if you like metal, you need this.

Not only of the most influential albums in metal history, but one of the most epic journey's through music that I have ever experienced. Absolutely incredible. In every way. Robot vocals? Hell fucking yeah. Incredible jazzy instrumental called Textures? Hell fucking yeah. Revolutionary in the genre of death-tech/death fusion? Hell fucking yeah. Entertaining throughout? Hell fucking yeah. Epic ending solos like the one in the track "How Could I"? Hell fucking yeah. Years ahead of it's time? Hell fucking yeah. A true classic? HELL FUCKING YEAH.

To this day, this is wonderfully weird and progressive. Imagine hearing this in 93 when you were just expecting some cool technical death/thrash based on the demos. Incredible, and I am glad I jammed the demos just to realise how giant a step they took. The opener is a fantastic summary of the album and displays right off the bat the weird vocals and tones we'll be offered all throughout. The conclusion in particular is fantastic. Sadly the album stumbles right after this strong start. 2-3 are relatively 'straightforward' dm tracks, and on them the vocoded vox and other prog elements feel like unjustified addition and no longer parts of a cohesive whole like they were on 1. I gotta say the prod, while more than alright, is not stellar, and doesn't serve the harsh parts or the bass too well imo. They're not as gritty and bouncy as they could be, respectively. 4 goes back to the calmer jazziness and proginness thankfully and is quite fantastic especially the last third albeit it sadly ends on a fadeout. 5-6 succeed where 2-3 failed, very good dm with only scarce proggy cynic elements - I particularly enjoyed 5's intro. 7 is a godtier instrumental jam and one of the proggiest here. The album intelligently ends on a strong track with vocals again though, only to sadly conclude on a fadeout. Immense, well constructed album that just had a little too many shortcomings to reach the 4.5 tear in my book. 4.15

As a young prog-nerd, the idea of Cynic excited me more than their actual music. Never quite got the hang of this one, probably because of the dated sound plus the vocoder being pretty lame. Some good moments, to be sure, ("Textures" in particular is excellent) but overall the songs languish. OK for a first full-length - I'm just happy they got back together and fully realized the interesting ideas they started with this record.

fused together like in Unquestionable Presence but are rather separate which can create some sort
of tension at times with them clashing but the whole sound ends up just being awkward and the
smooth jazz elements don't help.

I'm going to have to say that this is one of the most innovative, technical, and unique metal albums I have ever heard. Malone on bass is a sheer madman with a Chapman Stick (see Textures), Gobel can shred incredibly well (see... everything), Reinert keeps everything moving with amazing drumfills, and Masvidal can... uh... be a robot well, too. The incorporation of jazz in the mix of the technical metal is a great combination, adding a very flavorful influence. A metal classic.

the best of prog metal, even the quieter instrums/jazz infusions never lose their edge, nothing else matches it. robot vox add an interesting industrial lair, tho on a couple tracks their overuse changes the tone from serious to just plain silly. harsh vox, unlike on later death albums, actually match the music and arent overused. one of the few best prog metal albums

An excellent album, sure, and a game-changer, but not as good as its cult-rep will have you think. Masvidal's guitarwork specifically isn't as good as I'd expected, and although the guys are amazing players, the spacey fusion and DM really don't gel together all that well. Guys are amazing in their own regards though, 100%, and Textures.. Man what a track!

Cynic was SO ahead of their time upon having recorded the first studio album during their career. Not only do parts of the songs have superb musicianship, they even flow seamlessly; it's apparent that Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert aren't so big on abrupt transitions throughout Focus. On top of all this, the decision to have robotic-sounding vocals mesh with your run-of-the-mill death growls is just completely... Holy SHIT! Sean Malone's talents as the bassist are also solid, and his techniques shine on quite a few of the record's tracks. To summarize, Focus had a sound relatively unheard of back in 1993, and I can see why it's hailed as ingenious or perfect here.

I can clearly hear why is it considered a classic, and I can find something that i really like, but the production is abysmal (even on the remaster), I can't bear the two voices and I'm not a huge fan of the death parts/guitar tone. Maybe I'm way too overcritical with this album, but I don't know.. It's stuff that I feel I listen to because I have to rather than because I get satisfaction from hearing it.. Much like Meshuggah.

This album is usually recommended when one asks for a jazz-influenced metal album. Some say this is prog metal, while others coined a different term "jazz metal". Both can be right, elements of both can be found: progressive rock/metal is reflected in some song structures and occasional odd-time meters, while jazz influences are evident in some harmonic and rhythmic phenomena. The trading off of death grunts are vocoder vocals is quite attractive. Every aspect: lyrics, instrumentation, vocals are too advanced for their time. I recommend you go to Cynic Sphere to learn how to play every parts. A very influential album for the Prog Metal genre.

There is nothing that can be said about the composition of Focus that hasn't already been said before. However, I will say that when I first heard it I was completely turned off by the robo-vocals and I thought "I can't get into this," but I knew that there was something deep present under the surface and that is what reeled me back and brought me to love this record.

This is a transcendent album, melding tons of very different ideas into a sensational whole. The metal parts are ripping, the jazzy parts are ethereal and beautiful and the effected vocals are the perfect way to bring them together. I must admit that I wasn't that impressed with Focus upon first hearing it - I was one of the only people who heard Traced in Air before it. I found the production and vocoder vocals to be annoying. But now I've come to my senses and see this album as it should be seen - beautiful, majestic, terrifying, enlightening.

Completely great waste of time during my three hour-long bus trip. The lead singer knows how to use a vocoder like a master. The song "Textures" reminds me of salsa music that I was forced to listen to, but better. It's right up there with the (technical) death metal greats, like Atheist, Death, and Pestilence. Highly recommended to death metal or avant-garde fans. And to jazz fans, and I don't even like jazz!!!

It was one of those moments in life, every person who listens and loves music has. A moment that changes your perception of music to that degree that all standards you had before just become outdated. The most recent one came in the form of Cynic and it's first album Focus dating way back in 1993.
I could easily say that everything about this album is perfect. The growls, the somewhat alien, robotic voice created by a vocoder, the interplaying guitars, the best fretless bass performance I have ever heard, the brilliant drumming. Oh, but the atmosphere… This album just takes you to a distant place, it makes you detached from this world, sucked into a complex, layered plane of technical riffs cleverly interplaying with fusion jazz passages and occasional atmosferic keyboard melodies backed by a furiously good rythm section and phylosophical lyrics, the courtesy of Paul Masvidal. This album sounds like it is not from this world and that's how you will feel when you take a journey through it. Enjoy.

It's amazing that anyone could write an album this technical and still make the actual music so cohesive. This album isn't very outwardly emotional but there's sort of a tragic beauty here... I actually find this very melancholic. If I factored technicality into my ratings this would be a 4.5, but since I don't give a shit about technicality, this gets a 3.5 simply because the actual music so damn good.

Focus, the only full length ever released by Cynic until this year's Traced in Air, takes progressive metal to a level that is still yet to be matched. Cynic incorporates a substantial amount of jazz influence and eerie electronically altered clean vocals for an atmosphere that few bands have been able to achieve. Bass guitar also plays a large part in the music, which is highly unusual in the genre.

For the first time, I've listened to Cynic, hearing 6 of their songs off of various myspaces. I have played them repeatedly. I cannot believe how I never gave this band a try. Full of awesome riffs, jazzy parts that get to me, and strong vocals, this has quickly left quite an impression on me. Although the robot like vocals are a bit strange, they seem to go fit with all the electronic effects going on. I will rate this higher after I buy this.
