Anyone saying it's "overproduced and overcomplicated" is a pale elitist black metal nerd who thinks that by sounding good, they're somehow selling out. Grow up.

A couple of clunkers do not make Abrahadabra a less enjoyable or fun experience. The instrumentation is very well arranged and performed and the songwriting is pretty catchy especially on tracks like "Gateways", "Chess with the Abyss" and "Dimmu Borgir". Nevertheless, those who seek for a dark and heavy experience might find this one a bit too clean and harmless.

Mind is a a strange thing. It can make you see green colours as red, it is able to make you believe you are a dog and not a human. Some minds are saturated by jealousy (or by the need to say sth different) and really believe that abrahadabra is an awful album. It has so many new elements and so many brilliant melodies, that you cannot just bypass this album.

Sadly, the more I listened to this album the less I enjoyed it. "A Jewel Traced Through Coal" is easily the best song on the album, in my opinion; is the name a coincidence?

This isn't a great album but it's strengths are so strong that it's nonetheless clearly a success. If you need a healthy amount of vitriol with your black metal this won't be for you, but if you can appreciate the blending of basic black tonality with the richness of an orchestra of moving parts and emphatic climaxes this is going to hit the spot. Sure, the more symphonic passages are almost always the most moving, but in the end, does that matter?

Got it as a gag gift from a friend on Christmas because I'm always making fun of 'extreme' metal. I wouldn't say this one's good, but it's kind of fun in a super cheesy symphonic way.

An album that starts epic but ends being nothing new. Guitar work is just average, drumming is the same old stuff... But, all the orchestral parts are amazing, and hide some of the band's faults here and there. Overall a good album.

With all that fuss about hundreds of people involved into creation of this album I thought "Wow, that's gonna be a killer stuff". Alas, it is not. In fact, it's completely disappointing. I've desperately tried to find something, anything worth attention but after a few listens I must admit this bland-riffed record is simply mediocre, Good marketing, glossy covers and fancy clothes will not save the day. Sorry guys, you failed big time.

Abrahadabra is more of the same from a band who seem to be running on an old, tired engine that needs a real tune-up rather than an oil change. The music is fair enough and might satisfy fans for a short while, but it's unlikely that most will listen to or even remember it even a couple months after being released.

Remember when Shagrath told us to enter the supreme unknown in their press release for the album? Well, it looks like he's possibly the biggest liar I've ever heard of. Where most bands with talent would emphasize on said talent and progress into a powerful force of a band, Dimmu Borgir have decided to just re-tread their same old style - but this time, slathered it in orchestral wankery, over-production, and over-complicated and tedious songwriting. No place like home, I guess.r@nomos: pfffft.
