If there is one album that I think critics really slipped up on, it's Jimmy Eat World's Invented. Those pissed with the band for the bubblegum of Chase This Light have all they could ever want from the band on display here: hooks that take some digging, a less 'gay' mood - as some have said - and for God's sake, some sense of self-control. Jimmy Eat World's songwriting has not slipped up in the least either: each song, with some repeated listens, reveals itself as a classic J.E.W. tune. I wasn't a fan of the double-stacked long-winding closers that are "Invented" and "Mixtape" at first, but holy hell the songs rule once they grow on you, especially the former where I'm compelled to just lift my fist in the air once Jim Adkins puts on the passionate vocal once the distortion enters in near the song's end. Live a J.E.W. fan, die a J.E.W. fan - Invented is no snore-fest.

A little bit of a slow burn with some instant classics, like "Coffee and Cigarettes" and "Littlething". This album finds Jimmy Eat World turning back a little towards Clarity, and seems to be intentionally less polished. Those that are enamored by Jimmy Eat World's latest offerings might be let down at first. Most of the songs here took a few listens to grow on me. It was definitely worth the wait. This is some solid songwriting. I think the raw sound actually helps them out here, though some will miss the polish.

You could almost say Jimmy Eat World are re-invented but really they're just 'back'; Invented mixes Futures with Clarity, asks you to invest a bit of attention where Chase This Light was so easy, and carves its own feel out of old Jimmy Eat World textures. It's not so much Your New Aesthetic as Your Old Aesthetics Combined and it works a treat. A grower for sure, but undoubtedly one of the best albums in a stellar discography.

Every track on this record is so forgettable it's not even funny, after Futures JEW kind of went downhill (Releasing Chase This Light, a fairly good album), sure, it's enjoyable, but there's absolutely nothing remarkable about this album, I'm disappointed, to say the least.

Just because this is softer it doesn't mean it's bad. This is a great, enjoyable album by Jimmy Eat World. It just isn't as catchy as the last ones were, but instead much more experimental. I think i'm giving this a 4.
