Just as The Gaslight Anthem’s The ’59 Sound did in 2008, When the Night Comes revives the ghosts of Springsteen. With a punk rock mentality, unconditional exuberance, and a saxophone; The State Lottery’s 2010 release is an indication that Americana is still very much alive. And booming I might add. From the unrelenting energy of opener “Coming Alive” to extended sing-a-long “Spring, 2008, Detroit,” When the Night Comes is a staggering experience. As young as band as they are, The State Lottery understand their obligation to carry on the Americana legacy, and do a damn fine job of it.

This has a criminally low average rating. It's better than American Slang in my opinion, and one of the best rock albums of the year.

holy fuck why did i not know about this band until today it's basically like they said "hey Sirob what do you want our band to sound like" and i told them and they did it holy shit getting bumped to a 5 once i learn all the words and can shout them all

Great fun punk. Great home-grown music, but (just like BTMI!) the guy's vocals might turn away more die-hard fans than it will invite. For the fan of excellent low-budget gold who isn't looking for cleanliness or perfection. 3.7/5

While not as intoxicating as Titus' The Monitor or nostalgic as Gaslight's The 59 Sound, When The Night Comes occupies a comfortable place in the recent uprise of bands bringing pier-walking punk back to the world. Lovable, fun, and endearing.

Americana punk is a genre with few bands and artists to check out, but whenever you find a new one you haven't listened to yet, you know for sure it's gonna be a winner. Heartful performances, gritty vocals, a deep sense of melody and dynamics are elements you would normally expect, but The State Lottery give their formula a lil twist by featuring a mighty saxophone, making sure they would leave an indelibe trace within the folk punk history books. Oh, and the closer is fucking magnificent too.
