Fuck punk rock. It gave us a couple nice things before getting boring, but at the end of the day, fuck it for convincing entire generations that 10 minute hammond organ & moog solos are a bad thing.

If you got tired of the organ-fucked album "Emerson, Lake, and Palmer," then "Tarkus" might be a better match for you my friend. Its way more action-packed, think of running with a spear through a jungle stabbing at anteaters. Thats basically what reminds me of this album. Its a damn keyboard wank-fest, but I strangely must say it is very relaxing. Its like the music is so charged that you feel that its doing all the work for you and you have no need to be charged yourself, so you are automatically relaxed. But still, the only problem with it is that I don't think there is enough keyboards.

Tarkus ends up in the same pitfall Rush's 2112 would 5 years later: while the 20-minute epic title track is everything a progressive fan could wish for, the record's second half is considerably less interesting. Despite some good moments in Bitches Crystal, Infinite Space and A Time and A Place, the annoying Jeremy Bender and Are You Ready Eddy? feel very much out of place, making Tarkus uneven and not a pleasurable listen as a whole. It really is the title track that puts this up so high.

This album gets compared a lot to Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon. Both for being important prog rock albums of the 1970s. Since I adore DSOTM, I was expecting to like this as well and I did. To me, prog rock works better with echoey/shoegaze type production to give it that spacey feel, which is why in terms of prog rock, I'm more a Alan Parsons guy than a ELP guy, but still this was excellent.

The best of Emerson, Lake and Palmer is crafted in the twenty minutes and thirty five seconds of the seven part suite album title track, Tarkus. Instrumentals are interwoven with lyrical sections to share the tale of the armadillo hybrid tank waging battle with the manticore only to be ultimately defeated and reimaged as an aquatarkus. The 70s indeed were a glorious decade for progressive rock imagination. The Battlefield movement showcases Greg Lake's excellent guitar solo and it is a rather shame that the listener does not get to experience his work more often. Tarkus as a complete album tends to suffer similar to Rush's 2112 with a lengthy career defining song serving as the singular A side offering with the flip side to the record being somewhat of lesser quality. Jeremy Bender and Are You Ready Eddy? only serve purpose that the band did not always take itself completely serious.
