| 4.0 excellent | SwinginSoriano | February 28th 09 | A spectacular album by Sabbath. Oddly this is Sabbath's "Hair Metal" album, as the production is clean with accessible riffs and tons of keyboards. The resemblance (the sound) ends there, as all the lyrics are about either resisting Satan, succumbing to Satan, or just plain ol' fashioned Satan.
While Headless Cross is not going to give you a more enlightened view on life or help you be kinder to your neighbor, you will rock out big time. The only part of the album that sucks is that there are only seven songs! Better that than filler, otherwise it's on par with Dehumanizer, Paranoid, and Black Sabbath.

| 1.5 very poor | billdecker8 | January 26th 08 | This album is kinda the joke of all the sabbath albums. They're just trying way too hard to be EVIL. It's really almost embarassing to listen to. There's the occasional riff that you can get into, but the song structure and cheeseball lyrics are too distracting. It also is a major step backwards, considering Tony Martin's debut on Eternal Idol was a promising start to a new era for Iommi and the Sabbath brandname. On some of the more maligned albums (Born Again, Technical Ecstacy) at least there's a level of experimentation that makes those albums a good listen. I just had to review this one because its rating was an incredibly high 3.7 !!!!!!!!! C'mon reviewers, let's have some level of quality to our subjectivity.

| 4.0 excellent | Fernando Alves | January 16th 12 | Probably Sabbath's most overlooked album. My favourite songs here are "Devil & Daughter", "When Death Calls" and specially "Headless Cross", the best song of Tony Martin's era.

| 4.0 excellent | deroeckj | February 11th 08 | Completely void of filler tracks (for the first time since probably "Masters of Reality"), this is a very solid BS album.
The riff is central through the album, around which all the songs develop, as on highlights "when death calls" and the title track.
The last 2 songs are 2 of the most tunefull and lyrical poetic songs BS has ever written.
Only drawback for me is that they strive to much to go for the typical Sabbath-sound, leaving hardly any space for experimentations.

| 5.0 classic | galeleio | June 21st 06 | well lets see what we have here...
Black Sabbath's Headless Cross album, not that I have heard the other albums before except for Tyr (another good album) and Dehumanitizer, I would say this is their best song writting and vocals for the band. Just listen to Tony Martin's voice and lyrics, its as old school metal as it gets.
my favorite tracks of this album:
Headless Cross, Devil and Daughter, Kill in the Spirit World, Call of the Wild, Black Moon (especially) and Nightwing.
i'll give a better reveiw when i have more time

| 4.5 superb | Mitch | March 18th 22 | A highlight in Black Sabbath's already impressive discography. If Dio was on vocals this would have a 4+ average on this site and you know it. Purists seriously need to stop riding Ozzy and Dio's dicks so hard and actually give this a listen. One of the best albums Sabbath have ever released.

| 3.0 good | Eggnog Addict | October 24th 21 | a fair half n half metal/rock album with a heavier first half, tony martin is surprisingly improved and sounds like dio
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | Gary STAFF | October 21st 21 | A damn fine heavy/power metal album. Catchy songs, and the typical great Iommi riffs. Tony Martin deserves zero criticism, his performance is great and fits to this album.

| 3.7 great | manosg EMERITUS | December 29th 20 | The time will come when people realize that this is a really good album and listen to it for what it is, instead of looking for past glory or having Master of Reality in their minds.

| 2.5 average | davezillaMP3 | May 16th 20 | The gold ol Christian bois from the last album go through a phase where they like to talk about THE DARKNESS, so i guess it feels slightly more like a black sabbath album.

| 2.0 poor | GamamJ | March 13th 20 | It pains me to give such a low rating to a Black Sabbath album, but this one was truly nought more than a chore to sit through. Some riffs had potential, but it was all ruined by the Power Metal vocals, keyboards/synths and overall anthemic/chorus concentrated songs. Damn.
Bump |
| 4.5 superb | nics0 | December 7th 19 | This deserves better, if only for Tony
Martin's fantastic lyrics and vocals. Yes it
is much glossier than the typical Sabbath
album, but there is more to it than clean or
generic production values.

| 3.0 good | Resident Metalhead Piranha | June 19th 17 | Ray Gillen was the better singer for The Eternal Idol, but Tony Martin was a competent vocalist, and he has more room to breathe on the follow up Headless Cross. In fact, he channels his inner power metal, and he puts on a solid show in the process if a bit exaggerated at times. Drummer Cozy Powell's presence here doesn't hurt either, throwing in some technically impressive drum fills and appropriately tight grooves. Not flashy but played well. There's nothing particularly amazing here, and the album lacks true highlights like "Hard Life To Love" or "Ancient Warrior," but it's a pleasant late Sabbath release anchored by impressive vocals.

| 2.5 average | AvantSeventier | January 2nd 12 | It's hard begin and finish this album keeping your mind in it, lyrics are good but sometimes
They're so 'fantasious' that makes it annoying, maybe Cozy's Drums Work catches You,
although Tony Martin aren't a bad singer, his work in 'Headless Cross' ain't something out
of this world. Average point in Black Sabbath career.

| 3.5 great | sputnik1 | December 27th 11 | 3 or 4 Great songs, rest is filler. Best thing is Cozy Powell on this Album!I can find something to like about all Sabbath Albums - Legendary Band

| 0.0 | PlasmaShock | February 4th 10 | This is a HEAVILY underrated album. Dark, musical, well written lyrics, just what you'd expect from Black Sabbath. Now, some people think the reverb in this album is too much. I only agree with that statement in terms of the vocal and guitar multitracks because drums sound powerful and suit the album very well.
About the vocals....
Tony Martin and Dio are better vocallists than Ozzy, but Ozzy has a higher amount of character in his era of music than Martin. Each suits their own vocal sections in their albums and even when covering different songs.
Either way, this is a fantastic album and any Black Sabbath fan shouldn't ignore it.

| 0.0 | Jau Peacecraft | August 23rd 09 | The albums started out promising with the opener, then headless cross, & devil & daughter, but then the album progressively becomes more hair metalish & mainstream pandering. Martin's voice sounds more & more shrill with vibrato each time he raises his voice, & while otherwise he sounds competent, the over-use of vibrato makes listening to this album a chore.
Instrumentals of this and the last album, The Eternal Idol, would go a long way, imo.
It's an absolute shame since there are some good moments in the some of the songs, but they are ruined by gluttonous repetition of bars & too many verses.
Black Sabbath continues to make too many tracks with too little quality (i.e. filler), & their overall sound reflects this.
However, this album is great if you're a 80's hair metal fan, though. Just not my cup of tea; I'd rather listen to Born Again as at least that sounded like actual metal (despite the production).
