If you held Seven Swans in your hand it would crumble like sand. It's fragile and beautiful and intelligently layered.

Just fucking beautiful, I'll need to do a few return listens because I was really torn on giving this a 4 or a 4.5, but based on my enjoyment I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt for now. This is so pretty, so simple, so poetic and Sufjan's voice and lyrics are beautiful. Obvious highlights for me are 'To Be Alone With You', 'Sister', and 'Seven Swans'.

I will put the disclaimer here that I am a devout Christian, so I really appreciated the religious slant to Seven Swans. The lyrics mean a ton to me personally, so if you don't share my religious views you won't be able to appreciate this album nearly as much. However, musically this is just plain stellar. I'm a huge fan of Stevens's other work around this time, but even though it is still folksy and rootsy, Seven Swans has this much more intimate feel to it that draws me in. I love Illinois and Songs for Christmas so much because of their more symphonic and orchestral nature. The fact that Seven Swans eschews these elements makes it a very personal experience, which makes it just as good as the former two.

For me this is Sufjan Stevens most beautifull record. The guitars, the singing, the compositions there all stunning. The lyrics are beautifull. There are so many highlights; The electric guitar on 'Sister' is heavenly, A good man is hard to find is such a beautifull song and 'He woke me up again' with that lovely guitar picking and those beautifull lines: But I was a sleep and he woke me up again. Illinois might be a more complex record and in my opinion certainly a master piece for sure but so is Seven Swans.

Sufjan Steven's Seven Swans is a rather quiet affair, lacking the sprawling arrangements, lengthy song titles, and interludes of his more famous 'states' albums. Sufjan's formula here is much simpler: banjo, acoustic guitar, and his signature hushed vocals. While the album tends to get slow by the end, there are some truly beautiful songs here, including the phenomenal 'The Dress Looks Nice On You', and perhaps Sufjan's best song 'To Be Alone With You'. Other songs such as 'Sister' show an experimental approach, using complicated vocal harmonies in what is a prelude to much of the material on Illinois. At the end of the day, however, this is a quiet album that lovers of Iron & Wine and mellow folk/indie would love.
