Apparently considered a definitive text in the post-metal scene, Helmet's Betty had this sense of experimentation which couldn't possibly have worked more than it did in 1994. The album saw the band sprinkling their usual formula with jazz and blues influences, but the coherently raw guitar work as well as Page Hamilton's ridiculously sapient vocals weren't going to be a thing of the past anytime soon. With an everlasting puddle of technicality, organic drumming from John Stanier, and a brilliant opener in "Wilma's Rainbow", Helmet have went against the grain and mastered the basics with the release of their third studio effort Betty.

Worst choice of an album cover EVER! But certainly one of the best noise rock albums you will ever hear. Somehow this band took all the great features from Meantime and cranked them up to 11. This is a must for anyone wanting to get interested in noise rock.

Page Hamilton is so wrongfully overlooked. Although I think his best years are probably behind him at this point, "Betty" is like a day at the beach with sharp riffs and pounding drums. It never reached anything close to the Nevermind status that Interscope Records hoped it would achieve, nor did Helmet become the next Nirvana, but it is a milestone in their catalog and is a genre-bending cult classic. I know.

On Betty, Helmet manages to break out of their well-crafted box and open up their sound a bit with mostly positive results. It doesn't repeat the single-minded statement that is Meantime and delivers just the right amount of newfound light-heartedness and experimentation without making the change seem drastic or forced.
