As awesome as they are now, just two years before Kezia Protest the Hero wasn't all that great. Sounding more like a hardcore punk outfit before their transition to metal, A Calculated Use of Sound quite rarely impresses and all too often bores the listener. Why? There's nothing here that really could blow anyone away. The instrumental performances are pretty standard, with young Tim and Luke playing punk-ish riffs for the duration of the album. Worst of all, every person who gets annoyed by Rody's vocals now will want to kill themselves listening to this. By no means does music need to be technical to be interesting, but even then there aren't any real positives to be found here. A Calculated Use of Sound may provide an interesting look at the band's origins, but otherwise it's pretty forgettable.

Different from the progressive metal direction these men took beginning with their debut album Kezia, this EP showcases more of a punk style coming from the Canadian heretics and killers at Protest the Hero. A Calculated Use of Sound has a title which might be a little too ironic, though the tracks presented in their entirety here are swell. Rody Walker's vocals are mostly hit-and-miss, though the raw quality helps him occasionally.

Excusing Rody's poor vocal range, this is a technically solid mathcore album from some very young and aspiring individuals.

I actually quite like this album now, considering their age, the music is very good. Songs like 'fear and loathing..' and 'reds stars..', are my favourites. I didnt like this for quite a while, it was quite a punk record, and i'm not a huge fan of it as i find it boring sometimes. But i soon realised it was quite interesting to listen to sometimes. The main thing that puts me off listening to this album regularly is the vocals, as rody's werent very mature at this time, and can be quite cringeworthy.
