| 3.5 great | AnEpicDeath | November 23rd 10 | A bizarre, oft mildly disturbing, nearly instrumental, surrealist video concept album that frequently approaches drum solo status in the minimalism of its strings and keys. The drums are truly exceptional, however, and manage to be fairly technical, inventive, and groovy. Most of the story, which chronicles addiction, is revealed through the video, and the album is clearly intended to be watched/listened to as a singular composition rather than individual tracks. Musically, this is very difficult to categorize, the drums drawing primarily from prog, metal, and some styles I couldn't identify, and the bass and other instruments drawing largely from industrial and ambient music. The atmosphere is relentlessly dark, though the driving optimism of the fifth track is equally well executed. It's one of the strangest musical experiences I've stumbled upon, but is well worth a listen/watch, at a minimum, and is even available freely from their label, Come & Live! music.
