Iced Earth has always been one of the better known acts in power metal, and for good reason. Their style of thrash-influenced power metal has worked wonders with great, perfectly over-the-top vocals and lyrics from guys like Matt Barlow and Tim Owens. Here it's more of the same loveliness, with a horror monster theme and probably the best vocal performance by Matt Barlow under the band. Tracks like "Damien" and "The Ghost Of Freedom" blend the power metal riffing with lovely acoustic passages, while tracks like the instrumental "Frankenstein" have an almost punk-like exuberance to them in their relentless energy. The record in no way does anything groundbreaking, but it sure is a fast-paced, fun album that is just so perfectly Iced Earth.

Coming immediately after a trio of successful albums, it is easily understandable why this release often gets overlooked. Yet, Horror Show is a sensational concept album not only from a lyrical perspective but also from the perspective of individual performances. It's not an exaggeration to say that Barlow's final album before his first exit was a triumphant one. From the opening "Wolf" until the closing "The Phantom Opera Ghost", his vocals are emphatically dynamic and roaring. Richard Christy's addition brings a fresh breath of air with his energetic drum rhythms while his double bass furiosity complements perfectly Schaffer's signature razor riffs. The lyrical content touches various monstrous characters from the horror literature and the addition of choirs in various orchestral parts, gives a different dimension to some tracks. With the exception of "Ghost of Freedom" which is a great track but would make more sense to be included in Glorious Burden, Horror Show is a concrete release and one of my favorite albums. Recommendations: "Dracula", "Wolf", "Dragon's Child", "Damien"

Though Horror Show slumps during the second act, it ultimately catapults back upward to stake a notable claim. Just remember the kiddies will likely be more confused than terrified when blasting it from your garage come Halloween.

I don't understand why people don't care for this album. It's the greatest Iced Earth release -- absolutely no filler, killer riffs, and two epics in one album? Holy shit. On top of that, it has the greatest Iced Earth lineup -- Schaffer, Barlow, Christy and DiGorgio! You can't get better than this album.

Although Horror Show is often seen as one of Iced Earth's lesser efforts, it is in fact one of my favorite IE records. This album probably features the best production of all of their CDs.
As always, the riffing is simple and chugging at some points and highly creative at others.
