4.0 excellent | Scott | January 10th 20 | It says a lot that the same record without vocals is better than the one with Spencer Sotelo's frog croaks resembling aggressively performed human speech. Without the vocals though, you can soak in what's going on without any distractions, and there's quite a lot going on. A lot of these riffs don't feel uninspired, and the songwriting is adequate to know enough is enough. Even the 15 minute Magnum-Opus "Racecar" honestly feels like the easiest 15-minute song I've ever heard, which is fine in this context because the record knows it doesn't need to be a challenging listen. It's a Djent record for god's sake, but it's a damn good one.

5.0 classic | TooToot | June 27th 18 | No other ’djent’ (or whatever you wanna call it) act realises the juxtaposition of ethereal electronica with
detonative onslaughts of dense, electrifying riffage (while having PLENTY in the way of pathos) quite as perfectly
as this album does. The crystalline chord progressions sprawling across everywhere in ’Racecar’ is some of the
most unearthly shit I've ever heard. Sends chills down my spine like nothing else. And boy, does the main riff in
‘Insomnia’ absolutely explode. Anyway, this album is a work of pure fantastical, utterly futuristic elation. But at
the same time it’s among some of the most (oddly?) nostalgic music I‘ve ever heard. I don't have any clue how to
describe the emotions it invokes in me... Oh! and the Tron Legacy-seque neon logo on the album cover lends the
music quite an immense aesthetic appeal. Which always helps.

3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | October 9th 15 | Djent is a genre that, like a lot of metal subgenres, is maligned. I can't speak for the masses, but it's certainly never been my cup of tea. The only bands I really enjoyed within Djent where The Contortionist, which is on the fringe of the genre, and the instrumental Intervals. Periphery is the face of Djent, for better or for worse, and though I've only had small samples of the band, they weren't all that great. While this release is void of any vocals, which were too clean and perfectly-produced for my liking, the record doesn't do all that much for me. While the quieter moments are indeed pleasant and there is a nice amount of technical skill on display here, nothing really grabs me about it. The record is pretty long as it is, but to not have a song in the entire length where anything stands out from the rest of them makes it much longer than it should be. If I had to choose a favorite track, it'd probably be "Zlglorx", as the track contains the best instrumental playing on the record and is the closest the record comes to a cathartic moment. The band undoubtedly has a lot of skill with their instruments, and nothing on the record is bad per say, but it's unfortunately pretty forgettable on the whole. Still, isolated moments on the record are pretty enjoyable, and it's definitely better being completely instrumental.

4.5 superb | TheFourthCircle25 | April 18th 15 | Many complained about Spencer Sotelo's vocal performance on Periphery's S/T debut, but I rather enjoyed it. However, I can say that this instrumental version of their debut helps to illustrate just how good Periphery is at using their instruments. There is a reason why this band is heralded as one of the best bands in the "djent" genre (which I don't really consider to be a genre personally), and musically the band has always exceeded even when its vocals haven't been up to par with other "djent" bands such as TesseracT, Meshuggah, and Vildhjarta. There's nothing new here; it is the same album. however, it is a great version of the album that helps to illustrate the complexity and talent which went into making Periphery's S/T debut. It's a great disc and fans will no doubt love it. 9/10
